Kerala’s Renowned Hindu Temple Enveloped in Controversy Over Gold Theft Allegations

A prominent Hindu temple in southern India is at the center of a scandal involving the alleged theft of gold from its sacred idols. The Kerala High Court has revealed evidence suggesting that some of the temple’s gold-clad idols have been stripped of their valuable coverings. This shocking revelation has prompted the court to establish a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the matter further, leading to the arrest of three individuals, including a former assistant priest. The temple, known for its annual influx of millions of pilgrims, has faced scrutiny before, particularly regarding its controversial policies on women.
Details of the Allegations
The controversy revolves around two idols known as Dwarapalakas, which serve as door guards outside the temple’s main sanctum. The Kerala High Court initiated its investigation after a report from the Sabarimala Special Commissioner indicated that these idols had been stripped of their gold cladding in various areas. The court has been actively monitoring the case since September, with regular hearings scheduled, the next of which is set for Wednesday.
The judges have examined records from temple officials, including before-and-after photographs and other documentation collected by the SIT. They described the situation as an extraordinary case of “pilferage of Lord Ayyappa’s sacred valuables.” The court revealed that 30.291 kg of gold, donated by businessman Vijay Mallya in 1998-99, was used for the gold-cladding of the idols and other temple structures. However, investigations have shown that approximately 4.54 kg of gold has gone missing since 2019, raising serious concerns about the temple’s management and oversight.
Arrests and Investigations
The investigation has led to the arrest of Unnikrishnan Potty, a former assistant priest, who has been sent to judicial custody. Following his arrest, Potty claimed he was being “trapped” and expressed confidence that the truth would eventually emerge. In addition to Potty, two officials from the Travancore Devaswom Board, which oversees the temple, have also been arrested. The board’s president, PS Prasanth, is under investigation but has not responded to media inquiries. He previously stated that the current board had no involvement in the theft but pledged cooperation with the investigation.
The SIT has been tasked with completing its investigation within six weeks, and the court has emphasized its commitment to holding accountable anyone involved, regardless of their status or influence. This commitment underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the potential ramifications for those implicated.
Political Fallout and Public Outcry
The scandal has ignited a political firestorm in Kerala, with opposition parties staging protests against the ruling Communist government. Opposition leader VD Satheesan has claimed that around 5 kg of gold has been stolen and criticized the temple officials for their role in the incident. He and other opposition figures have called for the resignation of the state’s Minister for Temple Affairs, VN Vasavan, citing a failure to protect the temple’s valuables.
In response to the allegations, Vasavan has denied any wrongdoing and rejected calls for his resignation. He assured the public of full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and emphasized transparency regarding the temple’s financial transactions since 1998. The political tensions surrounding the scandal reflect broader concerns about governance and accountability in the management of religious institutions in the state.
