Tragedy Strikes in the Himalayas: Three Climbers Confirmed Dead, Four Others Missing Following Avalanche

At least three climbers, including a French national and two Nepali citizens, have tragically lost their lives due to an avalanche on a Himalayan peak in northeastern Nepal. The incident occurred near the base camp of Yalung Ri mountain in Dolakha district early on Monday morning. Rescue operations are ongoing for four additional climbers, comprising two Italians, a German, and a Canadian, who are currently unaccounted for. The group was part of a larger team of 12 trekkers and local guides when the avalanche struck.

Details of the Avalanche Incident

The avalanche hit at approximately 9:00 AM local time, just over an hour after the group began their trek. According to local police, the deceased and missing climbers were part of a team that had set out to climb the nearby Dolma Khang peak, which stands at an elevation of 6,332 meters (20,774 feet). Local deputy superintendent of police, Gyan Kumar Mahato, confirmed that three bodies have been located, while search teams are still working to find the remaining four individuals. The two Nepali climbers who also died have not been confirmed as part of the group or as climbers themselves.

Rescue Operations Underway

Rescue efforts have faced significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions and logistical difficulties. A helicopter was deployed to the Na Gaun area of Dolakha, which is a five-hour trek from the Yalung Ri base camp. Despite these obstacles, search teams remain committed to locating the missing climbers. Five Nepali guides who returned to the base camp sustained injuries but are not in critical condition. The ongoing search highlights the dangers associated with climbing in the region, especially during this time of year.

Additional Rescue Efforts in Western Nepal

In a separate incident, efforts are also underway to rescue two Italian climbers who went missing while attempting to scale the Panbari mountain in western Nepal. The climbers, Stefano Farronato and Alessandro Caputo, were part of a three-man group that became stranded along with three local guides last week. The third member of their group, identified as 65-year-old Velter Perlino, has been successfully rescued. These incidents underscore the inherent risks faced by climbers in Nepal, particularly during the autumn season when weather conditions can be unpredictable.

Impact of Recent Weather Conditions

Autumn is typically a favored season for trekkers and mountaineers in Nepal due to generally favorable weather and visibility. However, the recent impact of Cyclone Montha has resulted in heavy rain and snowfall across the country, leading to dangerous conditions in the Himalayas. Last week, several individuals, including two British nationals and an Irish woman, required rescue after being trapped for days in the Mustang region. Additionally, severe weather has left hundreds of hikers stranded near Mount Everest, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by nature in this popular trekking destination.
