Starmer Engages with Modi During Inaugural Visit to India

Sir Keir Starmer has embarked on his inaugural visit to India, where he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. This meeting is part of Modi’s two-day trade mission, which features a record delegation of over 100 business leaders, entrepreneurs, and cultural figures. The discussions aim to enhance business and trade relations following the landmark trade agreement signed between India and the UK in July. Starmer is also scheduled to deliver a keynote address at a fintech conference during his visit.

Historic Trade Mission

Prime Minister Modi has described the visit as “historic,” reflecting the significance of the discussions taking place. The streets of Mumbai are adorned with thousands of images of Modi and Starmer, showcasing the warm welcome extended to the UK leader. On his first day, Starmer engaged with Nandan Nilekani, the architect of India’s digital ID system, as the UK plans to introduce a similar system for its workforce. This initiative has faced opposition, with over 2.8 million people signing a petition against the compulsory digital ID, but the UK government remains committed to its implementation, citing the need to prevent illegal work by migrants.

Bollywood Collaboration and Economic Impact

In a notable announcement, Starmer revealed that Yash Raj Films will produce three Bollywood films in the UK starting in 2026, marking the end of an eight-year hiatus for the studio. This collaboration is expected to strengthen cultural ties between the two nations. The UK-India trade deal, which is yet to be fully implemented, has already resulted in £1 billion of investment and the creation of nearly 7,000 jobs in the UK. Under the agreement, India’s average tariff on UK goods will decrease significantly, from 15% to 3%, while the UK will reduce taxes on various Indian imports, including clothing and seafood.

Future Trade Prospects

The trade deal is projected to boost the UK’s GDP by £4.8 billion annually and increase bilateral trade by an additional £25.5 billion by 2040. Last year, trade between the UK and India reached £42.6 billion, with expectations for continued growth. Despite the positive outlook, Starmer emphasized that the UK would not ease visa restrictions for Indian nationals, although he acknowledged the vast opportunities for enhancing trade and cultural connections.

Geopolitical Context

Starmer’s visit occurs amid strained relations between India and the United States, particularly following President Trump’s imposition of 50% tariffs on India, which includes a penalty for purchasing Russian oil. Ongoing negotiations for a trade deal between India and the US have yet to yield significant progress. As Starmer engages with Indian leaders, the focus remains on fostering a robust partnership that can withstand the complexities of international trade dynamics.
