Google’s Gemini Set to Integrate with WhatsApp and Phone App

Google has recently informed select Android users about an upcoming change involving its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant. In an email sent on Tuesday, the tech giant announced that Gemini will soon interact with various on-device applications, regardless of whether users have enabled this feature. The rollout is set to begin on July 7, but the communication has sparked confusion among users, particularly regarding how to disable the feature if they choose to do so.
Users Share Screenshots of Google’s Email
Several users took to social media to share screenshots of the email they received from Google, which was first highlighted by tipster CID on X (formerly Twitter). The email, titled โWe’ve made it easier for Gemini to interact with your device,โ outlines the changes that will take effect after July 7. It details how Gemini will engage with various apps, including the Phone app, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities.
Interestingly, staff members at Gadgets 360 reported that they did not receive this email, raising questions about the rollout’s scope. The email indicates that Gemini will have the ability to interact with these applications โwhether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.โ This statement has raised concerns among users about their privacy, as it suggests that the AI assistant will access data from these apps without explicit user consent.
Privacy Concerns Arise Over Data Access
The email’s wording has led to significant unease regarding user privacy. While Google Assistant has previously accessed data from apps, the implications of AI models doing the same are less clear. Users are left wondering how their data will be processed, stored, and utilized by the company. The mention of Gemini’s capability to interact with apps regardless of user settings has intensified these concerns.
Later in the email, Google states that users can disable these features in the Apps settings page. However, this statement contradicts the earlier assertion that Gemini will function independently of user preferences. The lack of clarity on how to turn off the feature has left many users confused and frustrated.
Uncertainty Surrounds Future Updates
The ambiguity surrounding the email raises questions about whether it was intended solely for beta testers who may receive additional options to manage these interactions with the upcoming July 7 update. However, without an official announcement from Google, this remains speculative.
Currently, the only known method to disable app access is through the Apps page within the Gemini app. Yet, the company has indicated that the new feature will operate regardless of these settings. As users await further clarification from Google, the situation highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing AI advancements with user privacy and control.
