Apple Launches Accessibility Nutrition Labels and Magnifier Feature

Apple has announced a suite of new accessibility features that will be integrated into its operating systems later this year. Among the highlights are ‘nutrition labels’ for apps in the App Store, which will inform users about the accessibility options available for each application. Additionally, Mac users will benefit from a new magnifier app, while the Apple Watch will introduce Live Captions with the upcoming watchOS 12. These enhancements aim to improve the user experience for individuals with varying accessibility needs.

Accessibility Nutritional Labels Coming to the App Store

Apple plans to introduce Accessibility Nutritional Labels to the App Store with the release of iOS 19, expected in the third quarter of 2025. This feature will provide users with a clear overview of the accessibility features supported by each app, similar to the privacy details currently displayed. Users will be able to see if an app includes options such as Audio Descriptions, Voice Control, Captions, and VoiceOver. This initiative is part of Apple’s ongoing commitment to enhance accessibility across its platforms, ensuring that users can make informed choices about the applications they download.

New Magnifier App for Mac Users

The upcoming macOS update will introduce a new Magnifier app designed to assist users with visual impairments. To utilize this app, users will need a USB camera or an iPhone equipped with the Continuity Camera feature. The Magnifier app allows users to zoom in on whiteboards or screens, making it easier to read small text. Additionally, when used in Desk View, the app will enable users to read documents more comfortably. This feature is expected to significantly enhance the usability of Mac devices for those with low vision.

Enhanced Braille Access and Other Features

Later this year, Apple will roll out a new Braille Access feature across its devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. This feature will allow users to take notes in braille, perform calculations, launch applications, and open Braille Ready Format (BRF) files. Furthermore, Apple is introducing Accessibility Reader, a mode designed to assist users with low vision or dyslexia by allowing customization of font, color, and spacing. This mode will be integrated into the Magnifier app on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, making text more accessible.

Additional Accessibility Improvements on the Horizon

The Apple Watch will also enhance its accessibility features by allowing users to control Live Listen sessions on their iPhones while viewing captions on their watch screens. For users with low vision, the Apple Vision Pro’s main camera will enable zooming in on surroundings. Additionally, Apple plans to introduce Vehicle Motion Cues to macOS, a feature aimed at reducing motion sickness. The Personal Voice feature will provide more natural-sounding voices, while Sound Recognition will alert deaf or hard-of-hearing users when their name is mentioned. These updates are set to be unveiled alongside iOS 19, iPadOS 19, watchOS 12, and macOS 16, with further details expected at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9.
