Urgent Call for Gender Equality at UN Dialogue

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is intensifying its efforts to implement the Beijing Platform for Action during its sixty-ninth session. Participants emphasized the critical need for gender equality, linking it to global survival. The discussions also highlighted significant challenges, including financial cuts that threaten progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Reflecting on Progress and Challenges
During the high-level dialogue, Fernando Elรญsio Freire, Minister for Family, Inclusion and Social Development of Cabo Verde, chaired the session and underscored the Commission’s historical impact. He noted that while the Commission has made strides in promoting gender equality, translating international commitments into actionable policies remains essential. Freire stressed the importance of connecting women’s empowerment to local realities, stating that effective policies must address the diverse needs of women and girls. He called for enhanced accountability and interactive dialogues to strengthen national gender machineries. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, Ireland’s Minister for Health and co-facilitator of the discussion, echoed these sentiments. She highlighted the Commission’s role in shaping key human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Despite these advancements, MacNeill pointed out that full gender equality is still a distant goal. For instance, a girl born today will face decades of inequality before significant changes occur, such as the eradication of child marriage and equal representation in parliaments.
Strengthening Global Commitments
Lesego Chombo, Botswana’s Minister for Youth and Gender Affairs, emphasized the importance of the dialogue as a platform for addressing the needs of women and girls globally. She urged participants to leverage all available tools to advance gender equality. Chombo advocated for inclusive discussions that involve UN agencies and civil society, creating opportunities to support national efforts for gender equality. She expressed hope that the dialogue would lead to meaningful actions that translate global commitments into local realities. Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasil, Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women, stressed the urgency of addressing the needs of women and girls. He warned against allowing the Commission to become a mere symbolic entity, insisting that it must drive tangible change. Al-Wasil called for commitments to result in measurable progress that women and girls can experience in their daily lives, particularly as the digital revolution continues to unfold, leaving many behind.
Addressing Financial Challenges and Urgent Needs
Bob Rae, President of the Economic and Social Council, raised concerns about potential cuts to official development assistance, which could reach $60 billion by 2027. He warned that such reductions would dramatically impact UN agencies and programs. Rae emphasized the need for action to preserve the advancements made in gender equality and insisted that women’s voices must be integral to ongoing discussions about UN restructuring. Joanne Sandler, representing the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, called for immediate action to highlight the importance of gender equality for global survival. She proposed that the Commission focus on a concise, action-oriented agenda rather than lengthy negotiations. Sandler highlighted the urgent need to address violence against women and girls, which she described as a persistent pandemic. She urged for a collaborative approach that includes diverse stakeholders to dismantle discrimination and shape a better future for women and girls.
