Vande Bharat sleeper hits 180 kmph during trials
The Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance travel with the introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train. Recently, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video showcasing the train’s impressive capabilities. During trials, the Vande Bharat sleeper train reached a peak speed of 180 kilometers per hour. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian Railways as it prepares to enhance passenger travel experiences across the country. The trials are currently ongoing, with plans to introduce the sleeper train for public use by the end of the month.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Hits 180 km/h
In a demonstration of its capabilities, the Vande Bharat sleeper train successfully reached a maximum speed of 180 km/h during a series of trials. The trials took place over three days, concluding on January 2. During these tests, the train maintained a steady water level in a nearly full glass placed beside a mobile phone, highlighting the smoothness of the ride at high speeds. The trials included a 30-kilometer journey between Kota and Laban in Rajasthan, where the train achieved its peak speed.
On January 1, the train also reached 180 km/h during a 40-kilometer trial from Rohal Khurd to Kota. Additional speeds of 170 km/h and 160 km/h were recorded on different routes. Following these successful trials, the Railway Safety Commissioner will conduct a final assessment of the train at maximum speed. Only after passing this evaluation will the Vande Bharat sleeper train receive official certification and commence regular passenger services.
Innovative Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
The Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed with a range of advanced features aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and safety. It includes automatic doors, comfortable berths, and internet connectivity, all wrapped in an aeronautical-inspired design. One of the standout features is the KAVACH installation, an advanced train collision avoidance system that significantly improves safety during travel.
Passengers can expect jerk-free rides thanks to secure semi-permanent couplers that ensure smoother journeys. The train also adheres to EN-45545 HL3 standards for fire safety, providing peace of mind for travelers. Enhanced ride comfort is achieved through redesigned berths and ladders, making it easier for passengers to access upper berths.
Moreover, the Vande Bharat sleeper train is equipped with a regenerative braking mechanism that reduces energy consumption, making it more environmentally friendly. The integrated Coach Monitoring System manages air conditioning and lighting, ensuring a comfortable atmosphere throughout the journey. Surveillance cameras installed across all carriages enhance passenger safety, while special facilities cater to passengers with restricted mobility.
Future of Long-Distance Travel in India
With the introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train, Indian Railways aims to transform long-distance travel across the country. Currently, 136 Vande Bharat AC chair car trains operate on short and medium-distance routes, offering premium travel experiences. The sleeper variant is expected to provide even greater comfort for overnight journeys.
Indian Railways has faced several technical challenges in developing the sleeper coaches, particularly in conducting comprehensive trials with full passenger capacity and baggage loads. However, successful testing paves the way for travelers to enjoy superior long-distance journeys on routes such as Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Delhi to Mumbai, and Howrah to Chennai.
Currently, the average speed on the Mumbai-Delhi route is around 90 km/h, with the Tejas Rajdhani Express achieving a maximum speed of 140 km/h. The Vande Bharat sleeper train promises to significantly reduce travel times, making long-distance journeys more efficient and enjoyable for passengers.
