US Halts October Inflation and Jobs Data Collection, Impacting Fed’s December Decision Amid Shutdown Fallout

The U.S. government has announced that it will not publish official inflation or employment figures for October due to a prolonged government shutdown that hindered data collection efforts. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) confirmed the cancellation of the October consumer price index (CPI) and employment report, leaving the Federal Reserve without crucial economic indicators ahead of its upcoming policy meeting in December. This unprecedented situation raises concerns about the economic outlook as the Fed navigates through uncertainty.

The recent 43-day government shutdown has significantly disrupted the collection of essential economic data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) stated that it could not gather the necessary survey information for the October consumer price index (CPI) in time. As a result, the BLS announced that the October CPI report would be canceled, with only a few indexes based on nonsurvey data potentially being reconstructed. The agency indicated that any available October values will be released alongside the November CPI report on December 18.

Additionally, the shutdown has led to the cancellation of the October employment report. The BLS confirmed that the nonfarm payroll figures for October will be combined with November data, which is scheduled for release on December 16. However, the unemployment rate for October will remain unknown, as the data collection process was entirely halted during the shutdown. The BLS emphasized that survey-based data, which is critical for accurate reporting, was simply not gathered during this period.

Challenges for the Federal Reserve

The absence of key economic indicators poses a challenge for the Federal Reserve, which is set to meet on December 9-10. Fed Chair Jerome Powell recently likened the situation to “driving in the fog,” highlighting the difficulties policymakers face without standard datasets to guide their decisions. The Fed is currently under pressure to address inflation, which remains above typical levels, and officials are contemplating whether to implement another rate cut in response to the evolving economic landscape.

New York Fed President John Williams added to the conversation by suggesting that there may be “room for a further adjustment in the near term.” The uncertainty surrounding inflation and employment data complicates the Fed’s ability to make informed decisions, as it typically relies on these indicators to gauge economic health and adjust monetary policy accordingly.

Delayed Economic Indicators and Future Outlook

The government shutdown has not only affected the CPI and employment reports but has also delayed the release of various other economic indicators, including retail sales and trade data. These delays create a ripple effect, complicating the economic landscape as businesses and policymakers attempt to navigate through uncertain conditions.

As the Fed prepares for its upcoming meeting, the lack of timely data may lead to cautious decision-making. With President Trump’s tariffs continuing to exert pressure on inflation, some Fed officials are considering maintaining interest rates for a longer period. The interplay of these factors will be critical as the Federal Reserve seeks to stabilize the economy amid ongoing challenges.

The September jobs report, which was released with delays due to the shutdown, showed a modest increase of 119,000 jobs, but the unemployment rate rose to its highest level since 2021. The full October labor market report will not be published, but job creation figures for that month will be included in the November release, which occurs just after the Fed’s meeting. This situation underscores the ongoing economic uncertainties that both the government and the Federal Reserve must address in the coming months.
