United Nations Palestinian Rights Committee Enhances Collaboration in Chile to Promote Resolution for Palestine
The Bureau of the General Assembly’s Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People has issued a statement following a series of meetings in Santiago, Chile. These discussions took place during the Second Consultations in 2025, aimed at fostering cooperation and advancing solutions regarding the Palestinian question. The delegation engaged with various stakeholders, including Chilean parliamentarians and diplomats, to explore ways to support the Palestinian community and promote a political resolution.
Meetings with Chilean Parliamentarians
On November 11, the Committee delegation met with both current and former members of the Chilean Parliament. Notable attendees included Francisco Chahuán, Sergio Gahona, Ximena Rincón, and Marcela Sabat. The discussions focused on the engagement of the Palestinian community in Chile and their efforts within the legislative framework. One significant topic was a proposed law aimed at banning the import of goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements located in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This initiative reflects the Chilean Parliament’s commitment to addressing the complexities surrounding the Palestinian issue and supporting the rights of the Palestinian people.
Dialogue with Chilean Foreign Affairs Minister
On November 13, the delegation held a meeting with Chile’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren. The conversation revolved around Chile’s role in promoting a political solution to the Palestinian question, both regionally and at the United Nations headquarters. A key focus was the implementation of the “New York Declaration,” which emerged from the 2025 High-level International Conference aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement and advancing the Two-State Solution. The dialogue underscored Chile’s commitment to international cooperation and its active participation in discussions surrounding the Palestinian rights and statehood.
Engagement with International Affairs Practitioners
The delegation also participated in discussions at the Permanent Forum on Foreign Policy, where they met with former Chilean diplomats and current international affairs practitioners. Key figures included Sergio Bitar, Constanza Jorquera, Fernando Reyes-Matta, and Juan SomavÃa. The focus of these discussions was the current state of the multilateral world order and its implications for the Palestinian question. Outreach to Students at the University of Chile
In addition to meetings with officials, the delegation engaged with students from the Institute of International Studies at the University of Chile.
