Union Ministers Send Off Record 84 Indian Para-Athletes for Paris Paralympics 2024
In a spirited send-off ceremony held today in New Delhi, Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, along with Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Smt. Raksha Khadse extended their best wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the Paris Paralympics 2024. This year, India is sending its largest-ever delegation of 84 para-athletes, who will compete in 12 sports disciplines, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s paralympic history.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Mandaviya praised the resilience and determination of the athletes, stating, “Our para-athletes possess a remarkable ability to overcome obstacles and turn challenges into opportunities. They embody the spirit of India and serve as a profound source of inspiration for our 1.4 billion citizens.”
He emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to providing athletes with the necessary resources and support to excel on the global stage. Dr. Mandaviya highlighted the success of the Khelo India initiative, which has been instrumental in nurturing athletic talent across the country. Additionally, he mentioned the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which has provided targeted support to 50 para-athletes, further bolstering India’s competitive edge.
“This time, we are sending the largest-ever contingent of 84 para-athletes who will be participating in 12 games,” Dr. Mandaviya proudly announced. The athletes will compete in sports such as archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo.
During the ceremony, Dr. Mandaviya also took a moment to acknowledge the crucial role of the athletes’ families and coaches. “I want to extend my wishes to your families and coaches who have stood by you from the beginning of your journey,” he remarked, highlighting their unwavering support and dedication.
Adding to the enthusiasm of the event, the Union Minister launched a special anthem titled “Macha Dhoom,” a dynamic 3-minute 16-second composition designed to rally the athletes and ignite their competitive spirit as they prepare to represent India on the world stage.
Smt. Raksha Khadse, in her address, lauded the para-athletes for their exceptional dedication and perseverance. “Our athletes have demonstrated incredible resilience, and their journey is a true inspiration. We are immensely proud of them,” she said.
The event also saw Shri Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India, express gratitude to the government for its continued support of Paralympians. He underscored the pride in athletes preparing to represent India in Paris, highlighting their relentless efforts and indomitable spirit.
