Trump Allocates $500 Million to Support Republican Midterm Election Efforts
US President Donald Trump plans to allocate up to $500 million from his political action committee, MAGA Inc, to support Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections on November 3. This decision follows concerns among some Republicans that Trump had not utilized the group’s substantial cash reserves to assist candidates in competitive House and Senate races. Trump stated, “I think I have like close to a billion dollars in the super PAC, and I’m allocating probably four or $500 million,” during a press briefing in the Oval Office.
MAGA Inc reported having $403.45 million in cash on hand as of July 31, according to its latest Federal Election Commission filing. This amount is significantly less than the nearly $1 billion Trump claimed was available. The group has spent approximately $21 million since the beginning of 2025, including $1.7 million on independent expenditures. MAGA Inc has also begun activities in key battleground states, such as funding an event featuring Vice President JD Vance in Michigan this week.
Spending Push Comes Late in Campaign
Republican candidates and party officials have been anticipating an increase in spending from MAGA Inc. Concerns have been raised that the group’s considerable war chest might remain untapped. With only about two months remaining before Election Day, a late surge in advertising may not yield the desired results, as many voters may have already made their decisions, and advertising slots may be limited.
One race drawing particular concern is the Senate contest in Texas, where Republican Ken Paxton is facing Democrat James Talarico. Trump has endorsed Paxton over incumbent Republican John Cornyn, despite opposition from Senate Republican leaders. Trump has indicated he will take a more active role in the midterm campaign, stating he would make “a lot of stops” to support Republican candidates, including a trip to Alaska for Senator Dan Sullivan.
Beyond This Election
Trump also mentioned that some of the funds could be reserved for the 2028 presidential election. Federal regulations do not mandate that MAGA Inc spend all its money during the current election cycle, allowing the group to retain funds for future political activities. While Trump referred to the money as funds he controls, it is important to clarify that it is not his personal money. The FEC categorizes MAGA Inc as an “unauthorized” hybrid PAC, which does not solicit donations for specific candidates. Its “non-contribution account” can accept unlimited donations and spend independently to support or oppose candidates, but cannot directly contribute to candidates.
