Top Stock Recommendations: Nifty Outlook for the Week of February 16-20
Stock market expert Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical Research and Derivatives at SBI Securities, has identified Arvind and Bajaj Finance as the top stock picks for the week beginning February 16, 2026. In his analysis, Shah also provided insights into the performance of key indices, including Nifty and Bank Nifty, highlighting recent trends and potential future movements in the market.
Nifty Index Performance
Last week, the Nifty index faced challenges in maintaining its position above the critical 26,000 mark, leading to a significant wave of profit-taking. After briefly reaching 26,009, the index experienced a sharp decline of nearly 550 points in just two trading sessions. This downturn reflects underlying supply pressures at elevated levels. Notably, the Nifty IT index was a major contributor to this decline, plummeting by 8% over the week and more than 14% month-to-date. Investors are increasingly concerned about the impact of AI-driven startups, which are perceived as disruptive forces to traditional IT services. The extent of this decline raises questions about whether the sector has adequately accounted for these evolving risks.
From a technical perspective, the Nifty IT index is showing concerning signals, with all major constituents trading below their key moving averages, which are trending downward. Momentum indicators remain bearish, indicating a lack of stabilization or reversal. The broader Nifty index has also slipped below its 20-day, 50-day, and 100-day exponential moving averages (EMAs), signaling a deterioration in both short and medium-term trends. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) has struggled to reclaim the 60 level during recent pullbacks, suggesting limited upside potential in the near term. Immediate support is anticipated in the 25,350–25,300 range, while a decisive break below 25,300 could lead to further declines toward 25,100 and the critical 24,900 level.
Bank Nifty Analysis
In contrast to the broader market, the Bank Nifty index demonstrated resilience last week, closing flat despite increased volatility. Throughout the week, the index remained within a narrow 431-point range, indicating a phase of consolidation. However, this stability was disrupted on Friday when the index broke down from its range, signaling early signs of weakness after several days of subdued price action. Despite this dip, the Bank Nifty continues to trade above its major moving averages, which are still trending upward, suggesting that the overall trend remains intact.
Momentum indicators and oscillators, however, indicate a sideways-to-neutral bias, implying that the index may continue to consolidate before any significant directional movement occurs. In the coming days, the 20-day EMA zone of 60,000–59,900 will serve as immediate support. A sustained breakdown below 59,900 could lead to further declines toward the 50-day EMA, currently positioned near 59,467. Conversely, the 60,600–60,700 zone represents a critical resistance area, and a decisive close above this range may pave the way for a new upward trend.
Stock Recommendations: Arvind
Arvind has recently shown a breakout from a downward-sloping trendline on its weekly chart, supported by strong price action and increasing trading volumes. The weekly RSI has risen from 43 to 65, indicating a significant improvement in bullish momentum. Additionally, the Average Directional Index (ADX) is steadily increasing, suggesting that trend strength is expanding positively. The rising MACD histogram bars further confirm growing bullish control. Analysts recommend accumulating Arvind shares in the range of 386-383, with a stop-loss set at 370. The stock is expected to test the 420 level in the short term.
Stock Recommendations: Bajaj Finance
Bajaj Finance has also broken above a downward-sloping trendline on its daily chart, signaling a potential transition from correction to a new uptrend. A bullish reversal pattern is evident on the weekly chart, characterized by a strong bullish candle that engulfs the previous bearish candle. The RSI has surged from 39 to 56 over three sessions, reflecting a sharp recovery in momentum. The ADX indicates that bullish directional strength is building, while the MACD histogram shows diminishing downside momentum. Analysts suggest accumulating Bajaj Finance shares in the range of 1,025-1,035, with a stop-loss at 1,000. The stock is anticipated to reach the 1,100 level in the near future.
