TCS Plans to Match AI Agents with Employee Count

BENGALURU: TCS chairman N Chandrasekaran announced that the IT industry will see a significant reduction in hiring levels, attributing this shift to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in traditional roles. Speaking at TCS’s 31st annual general meeting, he stated that the company would not be hiring at the same scale as in previous decades. He projected that AI agents could eventually match the number of human employees, suggesting a future where TCS could employ as many AI agents as its current workforce of half a million.

Chandrasekaran’s comments come as the Indian IT services sector faces challenges from generative AI, which is automating tasks such as software testing and application maintenance. Despite concerns about the impact of AI on employment, he emphasized that the transition would create new opportunities and require a workforce skilled in AI. He noted the need for significant investment in AI skills to ensure continued employment in the industry.

Investors are currently questioning the future of IT services amid the AI revolution, leading to a decline in technology stocks. The Nifty IT index has fallen by more than a third, and global shares in tech services have also dropped. However, Chandrasekaran pointed out that the fundamentals of the industry remain strong, with stable margins and increasing revenues. He argued that AI should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat, identifying five key growth areas for IT services: modernizing legacy systems, redesigning business processes around AI, governing AI agents, building sovereign AI infrastructure, and deploying AI in physical environments.

Paytm plans to hire about 4,000 employees over the next nine months as it expands its merchant network and invests in AI. The recruitment will focus on product, technology, AI, and leadership roles, with over 800 new hires already made in the past two months. However, the company will also reduce its workforce by approximately 1%, affecting around 400 employees after the current appraisal cycle.
