Study Reveals Significant Need for Electrical Upgrades in Homes to Support EV Charging
NEW DELHI: A recent study has revealed that nearly 45% of Indian homes will require electrical upgrades to accommodate electric vehicle (EV) charging. This finding comes as the Delhi government plans to halt the registration of CNG- and petrol-fueled three-wheelers by January 2027 and two-wheelers by April 2028. The study was conducted by the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) and Kazam, analyzing over 80,000 residential EV charger installations across various city tiers.
The research highlights significant barriers to safe and reliable residential charging, despite the rapid growth in EV adoption in India. Issues such as outdated electrical infrastructure, housing design, and socio-economic factors hinder the transition to electric mobility. The study notes that while vehicle uptake and public charging expansion are often emphasized, the home charging landscape is complex and uneven.
Existing residential electrical systems were not designed for EV charging, leading to potential overloads that can cause frequent tripping, voltage fluctuations, and even transformer failures. Major obstacles include a lack of dedicated parking spaces, unclear guidelines for retrofitting older buildings, fire hazard concerns, and high costs associated with upgrading infrastructure. A discom official pointed out that many EV users in Delhi lack dedicated parking, complicating the provision of charging connections.
The study recommends establishing a unified framework that includes multiple standards and regulations to streamline residential charging implementation. Experts also noted ongoing challenges in EV adoption, such as insufficient public charging infrastructure and concerns regarding manufacturers’ claims about battery range and lifespan. According to policymakers, the typical life of an EV battery is around 7-8 years or approximately 1.2-1.3 lakh kilometers, indicating that most EVs will require at least one battery replacement during their 15-year registration period.
