SpaceX Stock Experiences Decline: Shares Drop Over 6% Following Strong Wall Street Debut

After a remarkable debut, SpaceX shares experienced a significant decline on Thursday, falling over 6% as initial excitement waned. The stock, led by Elon Musk, traded at $178.50, down 6.5% during the session, following a nearly 5% drop the previous day. Despite this downturn, shares remain more than 30% above the IPO price of $135.

The latest decline pressures SpaceX’s valuation, which stands at $2.52 trillion. If these losses persist, the company could see a reduction of over $150 billion in market value. This drop follows a strong first week on the market, where SpaceX’s valuation surged past $2 trillion after its Nasdaq debut. Investors are now reassessing whether the company’s valuation reflects its long-term prospects, especially as it increases spending on artificial intelligence initiatives.

Analysts noted that profit-taking was expected after such a significant IPO. IPOX Schuster analyst Kat Liu remarked, “Given the magnitude of the IPO and the strong initial performance, some degree of profit-taking is not surprising.” Investor activity has also shown a slowdown in buying momentum. Retail traders had purchased over $300 million worth of SpaceX shares in the previous three trading sessions, but net purchases dropped to only $9.1 million by 2:00 pm ET on Thursday.

The weakness in SpaceX shares affected the broader space sector as well. Companies like Rocket Lab and Planet Labs saw declines of about 3%, while AST SpaceMobile dropped around 7%. Intuitive Machines also fell, shedding roughly 3%.

Despite the stock’s volatility, SpaceX is advancing its artificial intelligence strategy. The company announced plans to acquire Anysphere, the developer of the AI coding agent Cursor, in a stock-based transaction valued at $60 billion. Additionally, sources indicate that SpaceX’s bankers are expected to start discussions with investors next week regarding a bond sale of at least $20 billion, aimed at supporting its AI ambitions.
