Rising Costs Could Impact Your Sugar Cravings

Consumer goods companies are preparing to raise prices due to soaring sugar costs. Bikaji Foods has announced a 2% price increase across its sweets portfolio, according to CFO Rishabh Jain. Despite government measures to stabilize prices, sugar procurement costs remain approximately 20% higher than in previous months.

The surge in sugar prices has disrupted cost calculations and budget planning for many companies. A senior executive from a large packaged foods firm, speaking anonymously, noted a significant gap between initial sugar sourcing estimates and current costs. As a result, companies are compelled to pass on these increases to consumers, which may lead to reduced product grammage and lower value realization. The high cost of raw materials could also force companies to cut marketing budgets, impacting the visibility of new product launches.

Hindustan Unilever, Marico, and Dabur have all implemented multiple price hikes ranging from 2% to 7% in response to ongoing commodity inflation exacerbated by global conflicts. Analysts at Anand Rathi indicated that rising prices for sugar, tea, and coffee over the past three months could trigger another round of price hikes or shrinkflation in packaged foods. Mayank Shah, chief marketing officer at Parle Products, acknowledged the impact on margins but emphasized efforts to enhance efficiencies ahead of the festive season.

Data from the consumer affairs ministry revealed that the all-India average retail sugar price reached Rs 62 per kg in September, up from Rs 47 in June. Average wholesale rates also increased, climbing to Rs 5,747 per quintal in September compared to Rs 4,350 in June. Sugar production for the current season is projected at 306 lakh metric tonnes, down from an initial estimate of 343 lakh metric tonnes, due to pest infestations and waterlogging. The government has allowed raw sugar imports for the first time in a decade and imposed stock limits to help control prices. However, Pushan Sharma, director at Crisil Intelligence, cautioned that these measures may not provide long-term relief for consumers.
