Railways Revamps On-Board Services, Enhancing Toilets, Garbage Management, and Linen in Gen Coaches

Railways in India is taking significant steps to enhance the travel experience for long-distance passengers by improving the cleanliness of train toilets. On Saturday, the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a series of reforms aimed at ensuring regular cleaning of toilets, wash basins, and garbage collection in trains, including those in general and unreserved coaches. This initiative marks a departure from the previous practice where cleaning was only conducted in reserved coaches and only upon receiving complaints. The new measures are set to be implemented over the next three years, with a focus on maintaining hygiene standards throughout the journey.

Introduction of Regular Cleaning Protocols

The Indian Railways is set to implement a new cleaning protocol that will ensure toilets in general coaches are cleaned every one to two hours. This initiative is a response to long-standing concerns from passengers regarding the state of onboard facilities. Previously, cleaning was sporadic and often dependent on passenger complaints. The new system aims to provide a more consistent and reliable cleaning schedule, enhancing the overall travel experience for millions of passengers. Railway officials have emphasized that this is the first time such a comprehensive cleaning strategy will be applied to general coaches, which are often crowded and underserved.

Transition to Continuous Cleaning Model

Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that the traditional “clean train station” concept, which allowed for thorough cleaning at select stations, is being replaced by a continuous cleaning model. This new approach will ensure that toilets, garbage bins, and cabin interiors are maintained throughout the journey, from the train’s departure to its final destination. The initiative aims to address not only cleanliness but also minor maintenance issues, such as lighting problems, ensuring a more pleasant environment for passengers. This shift reflects the Railways’ commitment to improving onboard services and passenger satisfaction.

Implementation Timeline and Scope

The reforms will initially cover around 80 long-distance trains that have high passenger volumes, with plans to expand the initiative to all trains over the next three years. The Railways intends to roll out these changes gradually, with 4-5 trains per zone being prioritized in the first six months. To ensure the effectiveness of the cleaning operations, fully technology-enabled professional teams will be employed, adhering to defined Service Level Agreements that specify cleaning frequencies. Additionally, the use of AI-generated images will allow for monitoring and analysis of cleaning activities, further enhancing accountability and service quality.

Enhancements in Cargo Terminal Operations

In addition to improving onboard services, the Railways is also focusing on enhancing its cargo terminal operations. The introduction of Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCTs) is expected to generate approximately Rs 30,000 crore in additional revenue over the next three years. These terminals will not only facilitate cargo handling but will also integrate processing capabilities, transforming them into “cargo plus processing” hubs. Furthermore, the contract period for these terminals will be extended from 35 years to 50 years, allowing for long-term planning and investment in infrastructure. This dual approach of improving passenger services and cargo operations reflects the Railways’ strategic vision for the future.
