Pune Metro Expansion: Cabinet Approves Phase-2 with Line 4 and 4A for Enhanced City Connectivity

The Union Cabinet has given the green light to two new corridors under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, marking a significant expansion of the city’s public transport system. This decision follows previous approvals for Lines 2A and 2B within the same phase. The newly sanctioned corridors, Line 4 and Line 4A, will enhance connectivity across key residential and commercial areas, ultimately improving access for commuters throughout Pune.

The approved corridors include Line 4, which stretches from Kharadi to Khadakwasla, and Line 4A, connecting Nal Stop to Warje and Manik Baug. Together, these lines will cover a total distance of 31.636 kilometers and feature 28 elevated stations. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 9,857.85 crore, with funding sourced from the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and international agencies. The completion timeline for the project is set at five years, aligning with Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan.

These new lines will integrate seamlessly with existing metro corridors at key junctions such as Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop, and Swargate. Additionally, an interchange will be established at Hadapsar Railway Station, facilitating connections with future extensions towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road. This integration is expected to enhance multimodal transport options, allowing for smoother transitions between metro, rail, and bus systems.

Impact on Commuters and Traffic

The expansion of the Pune Metro is anticipated to significantly alleviate congestion on some of the city’s busiest roads. The new corridors will run along major thoroughfares, including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway. By connecting vital areas such as Kharadi IT Park and Hadapsar’s industrial zone to Warje and Khadakwasla’s tourist attractions, the metro is expected to promote safer and more environmentally friendly transportation options.

Projected ridership for Lines 4 and 4A is estimated at 4.09 lakh passengers by 2028, with numbers expected to rise to over 11.7 lakh by 2058. Specifically, the Kharadi-Khadakwasla corridor is forecasted to accommodate 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, increasing to 9.33 lakh by 2058. Meanwhile, the Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug spur is expected to grow from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh commuters over the same period.

Project Execution and Future Prospects

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has been tasked with executing the project. Preliminary work has already commenced, including topographical surveys and detailed design tasks. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the project adheres to its timeline and budget.

The approval of these new corridors not only extends the Pune Metro network beyond 100 kilometers but also represents a significant step towards modernizing the city’s public transport infrastructure. As the project progresses, it is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the overall mobility landscape of Pune, making it easier for residents and visitors alike to navigate the city efficiently.
