We celebrate National Statistics Day on June 29, the anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis’ birth. He was an Indian scientist and statistician from West Bengal.

As a member of the first Planning Commission of India, PC Mahalanobis is best known for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure. Based on measurements in multiple dimensions, the formula is used to find the distance between a point and a distribution. It is commonly used in cluster analysis and classification. His most famous work is the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure, and for being a member of the first Planning Commission of Free India.

In addition to founding the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), he helped design large-scale sample surveys. Mahalanobis is regarded as the father of modern statistics in India due to his contributions.

As part of the celebration of Mahalonobis’s invaluable contribution to the establishment of the National Statistical System, the 29th of June has been designated as one of the special days to be observed at the national level, the ministry of statistics and programme implementation announced.

This day’s purpose is to create public awareness, especially among the younger generation about the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.
