Mizoram University Museum Named India’s 21st Biodiversity Repository

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has officially designated the Natural History Museum (NHM) at Mizoram University in Aizawl as a Designated Repository, as per Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act of 2002. This significant announcement followed a recommendation from the National Biodiversity Authority and was formalized by the Central Government on June 19, 2026. With this designation, NHM becomes the 21st such repository in India, bolstering the country’s efforts in biodiversity conservation and enhancing scientific research infrastructure.

Key Role in Biodiversity Conservation

Designated Repositories play a critical role in India’s biodiversity governance framework. They are responsible for preserving validated biological specimens acquired under the Biological Diversity Act. The NHM is set to maintain voucher specimens of various flora, including pteridophytes and macrofungi, alongside fauna such as reptiles, amphibians, fish, moths, beetles, and butterflies. Notably, it will also house type specimens of newly discovered species from the region. This repository not only aids in species identification and research but also fortifies the long-term conservation of India’s biological resources.

A Rich Biodiversity Hub

Established in 2022, the NHM is strategically located within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and boasts specialized taxonomic expertise. The northeastern region of India, particularly Mizoram, is home to over 7,500 species of flowering plants and more than 2,000 faunal species. With a focus on lesser-studied organisms like pteridophytes and macrofungi, the museum significantly enhances the documentation of the area’s biological wealth.

Fostering Scientific Discoveries

The NHM will actively contribute to the documentation and preservation of endemic species in the region, highlighting recent discoveries such as the amphibian Leptobrachella tamdil, found in Mizoram’s forests. This underscores the Northeast’s global significance as a biodiversity hotspot. Prior to its formal designation, the NHM’s scientific team had already collected and preserved over 500 specimens, showcasing their commitment to research. The multidisciplinary team at the museum includes experts from Mizoram University, spanning seven specialized taxonomic groups.

Enhancing Collaborative Efforts

This new designation will strengthen India’s national network of biodiversity repositories. It enables the preservation of specimens closer to their natural habitats, thus improving scientific documentation and fostering collaboration with the Mizoram State Biodiversity Board and local research institutions. The NHM complements existing facilities like the Botanical Survey of India and the Zoological Survey of India, advancing National Biodiversity Target 4 of India’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2030, while aligning with global efforts outlined in the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
