IIM Bangalore to Open International Campus in Indonesia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) will establish its first international campus in Indonesia. This initiative, revealed during his visit to the country and a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, aims to benefit the youth across the ASEAN region. The new campus will be located in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, Indonesia, marking a significant step in the internationalisation of India’s higher education landscape.

This landmark announcement highlights a major milestone in the global outreach of India’s top educational institutions. Following the successful launches of campuses by IIM Ahmedabad in Dubai and IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi, IIMB’s expansion further establishes India as a trusted global partner in educational excellence and innovation.

Strengthening India-Indonesia Ties

The establishment of the IIMB campus in Indonesia symbolizes the strengthening strategic partnership between India and Indonesia, showcasing India’s commitment to providing high-quality and affordable education. This move is also in alignment with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for premier Indian institutions to extend their global presence and make world-class education more accessible.

Future-Ready Curriculum

The campus will offer a curriculum designed to prepare future leaders, focusing on five critical areas of the modern business environment: Global Supply Chains, Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence, Climate and Sustainability, and Healthcare Management. The programmes will feature interactions with industry leaders and prominent academics, enhancing the learning experience.

Impelled by a phased implementation approach, Phase One will kick off with high-quality Executive Education Programs aimed at senior executives and public sector professionals. If Phase One proves successful after two years, Phase Two will introduce degree programs. The implementation will occur through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama, the managing entity of the Singhasari SEZ.

A Hub for Southeast Asia

While the campus is primarily designed for Indonesian nationals, it will also attract participants from surrounding Southeast Asian countries. Indonesian students will have opportunities to visit the IIMB campus in Bengaluru, fostering exposure to India’s vibrant innovation ecosystem and diverse business environment.

The initiative is poised to deepen the historical relationship between India and Indonesia while positioning Indonesia as a central hub for quality management education in the region. It reaffirms India’s dedication to positioning the Global South as a key destination for excellent education, leadership development, and innovation.
