Middle East Conflict Disrupts Supply of Dukes Balls, Impacting England Cricket

Supply Chain Disruptions
Dukes, which produces between 4,000 to 5,000 cricket balls each summer, is grappling with supply-chain issues linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Dilip Jajodia, the owner of Dukes for nearly 40 years, expressed frustration over the situation, stating that the company must ration the distribution of balls to clubs. This means that counties will receive only 50% of their usual supply at the beginning of the season. The manufacturing process for Dukes balls involves leather sourced from British cows, which is then processed in Chesterfield. Afterward, the materials are sent to South Asia for stitching before being shipped back to the UK. However, the return leg of this process has been severely impacted, leading to a shortage of finished products. Jajodia noted that while the factories in South Asia are ready to ship, airlines are facing significant delays due to the conflict, resulting in a backlog of freight.
Impact on Domestic Season
The shortage of Dukes balls could have serious implications for the start of the domestic cricket season. With counties receiving fewer balls than they typically require, there are concerns about how teams will manage their resources effectively. Jajodia highlighted the financial strain, noting that the cost of shipping has skyrocketed, with rates increasing from $5 to $15 per kilo. This dramatic rise in shipping costs, coupled with the ongoing conflict, has created a challenging environment for Dukes and the counties that rely on their products.
Despite these challenges, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has stated that there is no immediate cause for alarm. They confirmed that the Professional County Clubs have received their usual allocation of Dukes balls ahead of the season. The ECB also clarified that they procure balls in bulk based on the requests made by counties, ensuring that current supplies align with those needs. Furthermore, they assured that there are no issues regarding the availability of balls for Test matches scheduled later in the summer.
Future Considerations
The situation surrounding the supply of Dukes balls has gained additional significance following the ECB’s decision to phase out the Kookaburra ball from parts of the County Championship starting in the 2026 season. This change means that Dukes will become the sole supplier for the domestic red-ball competition, increasing the importance of a stable supply chain for the manufacturer.
