Media Organizations File Lawsuit Over Paid Access to Trump’s Posts on Truth Social

US President Donald Trump’s media company, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), is facing a lawsuit from press organizations over its new Truth Social service. The lawsuit claims that the service allows paying customers to access Trump’s posts before they are made public, which could lead to the misuse of official government information. The Intercept Media and the Freedom of the Press Foundation filed the suit in federal court, seeking to prevent Trump from using the platform for exclusive government communications.

The Truth API service, launched earlier this month, is marketed to investors who want early access to Trump’s social media posts. The lawsuit describes this arrangement as “profoundly corrupt” and unconstitutional, naming Trump and two senior advisers as defendants. Court documents allege that Trump stands to profit by providing “market-moving” government information to those willing to pay for it.

Trump posts, markets react

Trump’s social media posts often address issues that can influence financial markets, such as international conflicts and tariff decisions. These posts have historically caused significant fluctuations in commodities and stock prices. The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation have expressed concerns about their access to Trump’s announcements, stating they face delays and permanent barriers to archived posts, which complicates their reporting.

TMTG defends paid access service

A spokesperson for TMTG defended the Truth API, stating that information from Trump is widely disseminated across various platforms and news outlets, many of which offer subscription services. The spokesperson accused left-wing activists of attempting to misuse the legal system to censor Trump and harm TMTG’s shareholders. TMTG’s interim CEO, Kevin McGurn, noted that around ten groups have already subscribed to the Truth API, paying between $60,000 and $100,000 monthly. The company is also exploring an expansion of the service for retail investors and is in discussions with major news organizations and developers. TMTG shares fell over 6% on Wednesday, following a reported loss of $238 million in the second quarter of this year.
