JP Morgan Aims for Expanded Role in Mergers and Acquisitions
MUMBAI: JP Morgan is positioning itself for a larger role in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) financing following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) decision to allow domestic lenders to fund such activities. This change coincides with a trend of corporates returning to banks for financing in India, mirroring global patterns.
JP Morgan’s APAC head of corporate banking, Kerwin Clayton, emphasized the benefits of this shift. He noted that the integration of the corporate and investment banking divisions at JP Morgan facilitates collaboration, enhancing the firm’s ability to support corporate growth. Previously, local acquisition financing by domestic banks faced limitations, leading JP Morgan to utilize offshore structures. With the new RBI guidelines, the bank can now provide both onshore and offshore financing options.
The bank offers a range of financing solutions, including INR-denominated funding, external commercial borrowing (ECB) in dollars, and foreign portfolio investment (FPI) structures. Clayton pointed out that Indian corporate leverage levels are decreasing and remain healthy, bolstered by recent equity issuances that have strengthened balance sheets. He highlighted the dual advantages of a robust banking market and a supportive capital market in India.
JP Morgan is witnessing growth across various sectors, driven by India’s approximately 7% economic growth, increased overseas expansion, and capital expenditure (capex). Clayton remarked on the evolving landscape of Indian companies, noting that what was once considered a small company is now significantly larger. The firm is actively participating in substantial M&A deals and observing healthy mid-cap activity as companies gain confidence in international markets. Capex demand is also strong across multiple sectors.
