Industry Applauds Rs 7,280 Crore Rare Earth Magnet Initiative as Companies Aim for Reduced Import Dependence
The Union Cabinet’s recent approval of a ₹7,280 crore scheme for rare earth permanent magnets (REPM) has been hailed as a significant advancement for India’s electric vehicle (EV) and electronics sectors. This initiative aims to establish an integrated REPM manufacturing capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes per annum through five globally competitive projects. By providing sales-linked incentives and capital subsidies over a seven-year period, the program seeks to reduce India’s reliance on imports and cater to the increasing demand in various industries, including EVs, renewable energy, and defense.
Strategic Importance of the REPM Scheme
Industry leaders have underscored the strategic relevance of the REPM scheme for the electronics manufacturing landscape in India. Rajoo Goel, the secretary-general of the Electronic Industries Association of India, emphasized that this initiative represents a pioneering effort to support the entire supply chain for electronics. Rare earth magnets are essential components in electric motors, defense systems, renewable energy applications, and consumer electronics such as smartphones. Experts like Mayank Shrivastava from the Indian Institute of Science have pointed out that the program is as crucial as establishing semiconductor fabrication facilities, given the dependence of advanced electronics on magnetic materials.
Vivek Tyagi, a member of the executive council at the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association, noted that the initiative could significantly decrease import dependence for manufacturers of two- and three-wheelers, with potential benefits extending to four-wheeler manufacturers over time. The REPM scheme is viewed as complementary to the India Semiconductor Mission and other electronics initiatives, addressing key components of the EV supply chain.
Benefits for Electronics Manufacturing Services
Electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies are poised to gain indirect advantages from the enhanced availability of domestic magnets. Jasbir Singh Gujral, managing director of Syrma SGS, stated that a robust domestic magnet ecosystem would help EMS firms by ensuring a more reliable supply of magnet-based components, thereby mitigating the risk of supply chain disruptions. An anonymous EMS executive described the scheme as “very well curated” and timely, expressing confidence that investments would flow into the sector, which would help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
For fabless semiconductor companies, the REPM initiative signals India’s commitment to strengthening its hardware value chains. Sunil Kumar, cofounder of BigEndian Semiconductors, highlighted that while incentive schemes often favor larger organizations, it is crucial for policies to be adaptable to the needs of smaller companies, which are often the source of innovation.
Impact on MSMEs and Startups
The REPM program is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for the development of electronics clusters focused on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), fostering job creation and nurturing startups in the rare earth magnet sector and related fields. T Senthil Siva Subramanian from Hindustan College of Science and Technology noted that these clusters could align with initiatives like “Vocal for Local” and “One District One Product,” while also contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Experts have also pointed out the strategic importance of establishing domestic REPM production capabilities. Subramanian emphasized that local design and manufacturing could enhance India’s global standing in high-tech production and drive innovation in products reliant on rare earth magnets, which are vital for sectors such as defense, medical devices, nuclear research, and precision agriculture. The consensus among industry stakeholders is that while the REPM scheme is a long-term initiative, it could lay a foundational framework for advancements in EVs, robotics, semiconductors, and flexible electronics, thereby reinforcing India’s position in the global technology supply chain.
