IndiGo Crisis: InterGlobe Aviation Shares Plummet Amid Ongoing Flight Cancellations and Disruptions

InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, experienced a significant drop in its stock price on Monday, falling over 7% amid ongoing flight cancellations and disruptions that have persisted for a week. The shares fell to Rs 4,976.40, a decrease of Rs 394.90 (7.35%) as of 11:25 AM on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). This decline comes as regulators increase scrutiny of the airline, and passengers express growing frustration over the situation.

Flight Cancellations Continue

The crisis for IndiGo escalated on Monday, with more than 250 flight cancellations reported from major hubs like Delhi and Bengaluru. At Delhi airport, 134 flights were canceled, including 75 departures and 59 arrivals. Bengaluru faced similar issues, with 117 cancellations, comprising 65 arrivals and 62 departures. Some reports indicated that the number of cancellations in Bengaluru could be as high as 127, underscoring the scale of the operational disruptions. The airline has faced mounting pressure since December 2, when a surge in cancellations left thousands of passengers stranded across the country.

IndiGo attributed these widespread cancellations to the implementation of new flight duty time limitation (FDTL) regulations. The airline stated that these updated rules necessitated significant adjustments to pilot schedules, contributing to the operational chaos. The ongoing disruptions have not only affected passengers but have also raised concerns about the airline’s operational management.

Regulatory Scrutiny Heightens

In response to the ongoing operational failures, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has intensified its scrutiny of IndiGo. Late on Sunday, the DGCA extended the deadline for the airline’s top executives, including CEO Pieter Elbers and COO Isidro Porqueras, to respond to a show-cause notice. The DGCA has demanded explanations regarding the “large-scale operational failures,” which it believes indicate lapses in planning and resource management. The executives are required to submit their responses by 6 PM on Monday, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The DGCA’s actions reflect a growing concern about the airline’s ability to manage its operations effectively. The regulator’s warning underscores the potential consequences of the ongoing disruptions, which have drawn significant public attention and criticism.

Understanding the New Regulations

The turmoil at IndiGo has been largely attributed to the rollout of new duty-time regulations, which were introduced in two phases on July 1 and November 1. These regulations require longer weekly rest periods for pilots, extending night hours, and limiting the number of night landings from six to two. Initially, both IndiGo and Air India resisted these changes, but they were ultimately enforced following directives from the Delhi High Court.

IndiGo has received temporary relaxations regarding the second phase of these regulations, which are set to last until February 10. However, the airline’s struggles to adapt to these new norms have raised questions about its operational resilience and ability to maintain service quality amidst regulatory changes. The situation remains fluid, with passengers and stakeholders closely monitoring developments as the airline navigates these challenges.
