IndiGo Crisis Escalates as Passengers Express Frustration Amid 650 Flight Cancellations
Despite recent relaxations in Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations, chaos reigned at major Indian airports on Sunday as passengers faced significant disruptions. Frustration boiled over as travelers shouted and cried, seeking answers amid widespread flight cancellations and delays. IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, managed to operate only 1,650 of its 2,300 scheduled flights, leaving many passengers stranded and desperate for information and alternatives.
Passenger Frustration and Desperation
At airports across India, stranded travelers expressed their anger and confusion over the lack of communication regarding their flights. In Thiruvananthapuram, passenger Pravita Hari shared her distress after receiving a web check-in message at 3 AM, only to find no clarity about her flight status. “I have a return ticket on 21st December… I have reached here by train, but the return ticket is for a flight. So, my hours will suffer,” she lamented. Similar scenes unfolded at various airports, where passengers broke down in tears and confronted ground staff in frustration. In Lucknow, a scuffle erupted among passengers due to the overwhelming number of cancellations, while in Mumbai, tempers flared at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as travelers argued with IndiGo representatives. The emotional toll on passengers was evident, with many struggling to find alternative travel options amid the chaos.
Logistical Breakdown and Lost Luggage
The mass cancellations led to a significant logistical breakdown at multiple airports, with luggage piling up and remaining unclaimed. Many passengers reported that their bags were still missing, leaving them without essential belongings. The situation was particularly dire for those who had urgent travel needs or medical emergencies. As travelers sought assistance, they found limited options available, with other airlines charging exorbitant fares for last-minute bookings. The frustration was palpable as passengers navigated long queues and faced uncertainty about their travel plans. Reports indicated that IndiGo’s operational issues had left thousands of bags stranded, compounding the distress of affected travelers.
Extent of Cancellations Across Major Airports
The disruption affected several of India’s busiest airports, with significant cancellations reported. Hyderabad saw 115 flights canceled, while Delhi and Kolkata airports reported 109 and 76 cancellations, respectively. Other airports, including Ahmedabad and Pune, also experienced numerous flight disruptions. Overall, approximately one-third of IndiGo’s total flight schedule was impacted, leading to a surge in airfares on alternative airlines. In response to the rising costs, the government intervened to cap ticket prices, ensuring that passengers would not face exorbitant fares during this crisis.
IndiGo’s Response and Future Outlook
In the wake of the operational disruptions, IndiGo has stated that it is working towards stabilizing its services. The airline reported a gradual improvement in operations, with an increase in the number of flights operated and a rise in on-time performance. IndiGo has also initiated processes for refunds and baggage claims, aiming to restore normalcy by mid-December. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued show-cause notices to IndiGo’s management, citing significant lapses in planning and resource management. As the situation unfolds, the government is closely monitoring the crisis, with potential further actions pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
