IndiGo Crisis Enters Day 7: Supreme Court Rejects Urgent Plea Amidst Widespread Cancellations and Delays
IndiGo Airlines is grappling with a significant operational crisis that has now extended into its seventh day, resulting in over 400 flight cancellations across major airports in India. This ongoing disruption has left thousands of passengers stranded, prompting widespread concern and frustration. The Supreme Court has declined to intervene in the matter, stating that the government is already addressing the situation. The airline’s troubles began following the implementation of stricter pilot duty regulations, which have severely impacted its flight schedules.
Widespread Flight Cancellations
The impact of IndiGo’s operational crisis has been felt across several key airports in India. On Monday, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport reported the cancellation of 127 IndiGo flights, including 65 arrivals and 62 departures. Similarly, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport saw 77 flights cancelled, with 38 arrivals and 39 departures affected. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport recorded the highest number of cancellations, totaling 134 flights, which included 75 departures and 59 arrivals. Other airports, such as Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, and Guwahati, also reported multiple cancellations, leaving many passengers stranded in terminal areas, anxiously awaiting updates on their travel plans.
Supreme Court’s Response
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Supreme Court has opted not to grant an urgent hearing for a plea that sought judicial intervention regarding the mass cancellations. The court acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, noting that lakhs of passengers are currently stranded at airports. Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized that the government has already taken action to address the issue. The plea highlighted the suffering of passengers due to the cancellations and delays, with some travelers not receiving prior notifications about their flight status. The court’s decision reflects confidence in the government’s ability to manage the crisis effectively.
Government and Regulatory Actions
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken steps to address the operational failures at IndiGo. The DGCA granted a 24-hour extension for the airline’s executives to respond to a Show Cause Notice regarding significant lapses in planning and resource management. The regulator has warned that failure to respond could lead to decisions being made without their input. Additionally, the civil aviation ministry has intervened to cap domestic airfares at Rs 18,000 to prevent airlines from charging exorbitant prices during the disruption. IndiGo has been instructed to restore operations fully within two days and ensure timely refunds for affected passengers.
IndiGo’s Measures and Future Outlook
In light of the crisis, IndiGo has begun to acknowledge the scale of the disruptions. The airline’s CEO issued a public apology for the inconvenience caused and announced automatic refunds for affected passengers, waiving rescheduling fees for flights booked between December 5 and 15. The civil aviation ministry reported that refunds totaling Rs 610 crore have already been processed. As the situation evolves, IndiGo aims to stabilize its operations by December 10, with plans to operate approximately 1,650 flights daily. The DGCA has also appealed to pilot bodies for cooperation, especially with the peak travel season approaching, to ensure that operations can return to normal as soon as possible.
