Indians Rank as Second Most Optimistic Group Regarding Economic Outlook
Optimism among Indians has surged by 7% in recent weeks, reflecting a growing confidence in the nation’s governance and economic stability. According to the latest Ipsos survey, 69% of respondents believe India is on the right track, positioning the country second globally, just behind Singapore. While global confidence remains low, with only 41% of people worldwide expressing optimism, India’s positive outlook is bolstered by effective policies and a focus on sustainable growth.
India’s Rising Confidence
The Ipsos survey, titled “What Worries the World,” reveals a significant increase in optimism among Indians, rising from 62% to 69% in just one month. This places India alongside Malaysia, with both countries trailing only Singapore, where 82% of respondents feel positive about their nation’s direction. The survey highlights that India’s robust governance and policy continuity contribute to this rising confidence. Suresh Ramalingam, CEO of Ipsos India, emphasized that India’s status as the world’s fourth-largest economy is supported by a long-term vision that prioritizes citizens’ needs. Initiatives such as targeted economic growth, healthcare programs, and infrastructure investments are central to this strategy.
Public Concerns Remain Steady
Despite the rise in optimism, the survey indicates that public concerns in India have remained relatively stable. While worries about education have increased, other anxieties, including inflation, unemployment, and corruption, have not seen significant changes. This stability suggests a calmer public mood, which may be a result of effective governance and policy measures. Ramalingam noted that revisions to the US-India trade deal are expected to enhance educational access and opportunities, potentially alleviating some concerns in this area. However, the cost of living continues to be the primary worry for many Indians, reflecting ongoing economic challenges.
Global Context and Challenges
On a global scale, the survey reveals a subdued sense of confidence, with only 41% of respondents worldwide believing their countries are on the right path. France recorded the lowest optimism, with just 9% of its population expressing a positive outlook. Ongoing conflicts in regions such as Gaza and Ukraine have heightened concerns about crime and violence, which are now the leading worries globally. Ramalingam pointed out that while food inflation has moderated, the overall cost of living remains a pressing issue for many, both in India and around the world. Continued peace efforts in conflict zones offer a glimmer of hope for improvement in the coming months.
Survey Methodology and Demographics
Ipsos conducted the Global Advisor survey across 29 countries between December 24, 2025, and January 9, 2026. The survey utilized an online panel, targeting adults aged 18 to 74 in various countries, including Canada, Israel, and Malaysia. The sample sizes varied, with around 1,000 respondents in larger markets and approximately 500 in smaller ones. In India, the survey included urban socio-economic classes A, B, and C across metropolitan and tier 1 to 3 towns, ensuring a representative demographic. The credibility intervals for the samples were plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for larger samples and plus or minus 5 percentage points for smaller ones, providing a reliable snapshot of public sentiment.
