Indian Railways’ Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Indian Railways is set to introduce its first Vande Bharat sleeper train, aiming for a launch in December. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the prototype is undergoing modifications following trial runs to enhance passenger comfort. This new sleeper variant is designed to provide a more luxurious travel experience compared to the existing Rajdhani Express on long-distance overnight routes, marking a significant step in premium rail travel in India.

Launch Timeline and Modifications

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to debut in December, as confirmed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He stated that minor retrofitting work is currently underway on the first prototype to improve passenger comfort. Following extensive trials, adjustments to the bogies and seating arrangements are being implemented based on feedback from the initial testing phase. Vaishnaw emphasized that while these modifications are minor, they are crucial for ensuring a high standard of comfort for travelers.

The first rake of the sleeper train has returned to the manufacturing facility for these enhancements after comprehensive testing overseen by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Commissioner of Railway Safety. BEML, the manufacturer, is responsible for producing ten of these sleeper trains. The focus remains on addressing any issues identified during trials to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Key Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

The new Vande Bharat sleeper train will feature 16 coaches, including 11 AC 3-tier, 4 AC 2-tier, and one AC First Class compartment. It is designed as a semi-high-speed, self-propelled train capable of reaching speeds of 160 km/h, with a testing speed of up to 180 km/h. The train incorporates advanced features such as specially designed night lighting, integrated announcement systems with visual displays, and surveillance cameras for enhanced security.

Built to meet European railway standards, the sleeper train promises superior comfort with well-appointed coaches and padded berths. Accessibility improvements have been made for passengers using upper berths, and advanced bio-vacuum toilets, similar to those found in airplanes, will be installed throughout the train. The AC First Class sections will even offer shower facilities with hot water.

Safety features include the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision technology and regenerative braking systems to optimize energy consumption. The coaches will also have automatic connecting doors between compartments and fully sealed gangways to maintain a dust-free environment.

Safety Standards and Quality Assurance

The Railway Ministry has prioritized safety in the design of the Vande Bharat sleeper train. Recent approvals included the installation of an Arc Fault Detection Device for fire prevention, repositioning of AC ducts, and the implementation of CCTV fire-survival cables. The ministry has also mandated compliance with European fire safety and crash resistance standards.

Concerns regarding the train’s interior finishing and construction quality have been addressed in communications sent to the RDSO and zonal railways. An emergency alarm button, which was found to be inaccessible in its current location, will be relocated to ensure it is easily reachable by passengers in case of emergencies. The ministry’s commitment to quality and safety reflects its dedication to providing a reliable and comfortable travel experience for future generations.
