India Strengthens Global Presence with Locomotive Exports to Mozambique
In a notable achievement for India’s locomotive manufacturing sector, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) proudly dispatched its sixth 3300 Horse Power AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique on December 15, 2025. This export marks a significant milestone, with BLW securing an order for ten such advanced locomotives, further establishing the country’s manufacturing prowess on the international stage.
The collaboration for this project is carried out through M/s RITES, under a contract for the manufacture and export of these locomotives. The first two units were sent off in June 2025, followed by additional shipments in September, October, and the fifth unit on December 12. The sixth locomotive was delivered just three days later, demonstrating BLW’s efficient production capacity and commitment to meet international demands.
Advanced Features for Enhanced Performance
These modern 3300 HP Cape Gauge (1067 mm) locomotives can achieve speeds up to 100 km/h and come equipped with driver-friendly amenities such as a refrigerator, hot plate, and mobile holder. The design also includes a state-of-the-art cab that enhances both comfort and operational efficiency, making them an attractive option for railway systems in Mozambique.
Emerging as an Export Hub
Located in Varanasi, BLW, a public sector undertaking under Indian Railways, is rapidly becoming a hub for locomotive exports. Since 2014, the facility has delivered locomotives to various countries, including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Mozambique, thereby contributing to the development of their railway infrastructure. This growth aligns with India’s ambitious vision of “Make in India” and “Make for the World,” showcasing its capability to deliver tailored railway solutions for diverse gauge systems.
Global Reach of Indian Railways
India’s achievements in exporting railway equipment extend beyond locomotives. The country has successfully supplied metro coaches, passenger coaches, and critical rail infrastructure components to nations across Europe, such as the UK, France, and Spain, alongside various African countries including South Africa and Mozambique. Additionally, equipment has been exported to Australia, Canada, and Mexico, among others.
These ongoing initiatives from BLW underscore India’s growing technological self-reliance and its expanding influence in the global railway equipment sector. As the nation continues to boost its export capabilities, it reinforces its status as a dependable partner in railway development, further enhancing its standing in international markets.
