India Launches National Digital Livestock Mission to Revolutionize Farming
The Government of India has unveiled the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), a significant step towards modernizing the livestock sector. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive digital database for livestock and related services across the nation. The primary goals of NDLM include boosting productivity, enhancing breed improvement, strengthening disease surveillance, and ensuring traceability of livestock products for farmers throughout the country.
The NDLM has already gained traction in various states, notably in Uttar Pradesh, where districts such as Etah, Kasganj, and Aonla have been successfully incorporated into the system. Currently, 9.5 crore livestock owners and their animals have been registered under this initiative, which has issued an impressive 35.96 crore Pashu Aadhaar IDs.
Empowering Farmers Through Technology
To achieve its objectives, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) has rolled out a farmer-centric digital ecosystem named “Bharat Pashudhan.” This platform includes a mobile application and web interface designed to record essential information regarding livestock. Each animal receives a unique 12-digit bar-coded ear tag, which enables field workers to document details such as registrations, vaccinations, breeding activities, and disease reporting effectively.
Statistical data released by the government reveals that the system is already making an impact: 146.6 crore vaccination records and 250 crore transactional entries have been logged in the Bharat Pashudhan database. The initiative also boasts around 4 lakh field workers actively using the system to facilitate service delivery.
Key Objectives of NDLM
The National Digital Livestock Mission has several crucial objectives designed to enhance the livestock sector. These include:
- Breed Improvement: The integration of technological systems aims to enhance breeding standards, ensuring the availability of high-quality germplasm suited to India’s diverse agroclimatic regions.
- Disease Monitoring and Control: NDLM will incorporate advanced disease monitoring and control systems, enabling the prevention and treatment of major livestock illnesses.
- Product Traceability: The integration ofTag-IDs and geographical data will facilitate traceability in livestock products. This will open new avenues for branding and market exploration.
- Farmer-Centric Ecosystem: The mission focuses on empowering farmers by equipping them with the necessary information about government services and schemes.
- Open Source Architecture: The NDLM database operates on an open-source framework, allowing easy integration with various stakeholder systems, including financing institutions and insurance providers.
Furthermore, the Bharat Pashudhan initiative includes the 1962 Livestock Owner App, designed to keep farmers informed about their registered animals and the latest ministry schemes available to them. This new application replaces the previous e-Gopala livestock owners application, enhancing the overall service experience.
These updates were shared by Shri Rajeev Ranjan Singh, the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, during a Lok Sabha session, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of livestock owners through innovative digital solutions.
