India and US Leaders Advocate for Timely, Balanced Trade Agreement
Trade negotiations between India and the United States are poised to accelerate following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in Evian, France. The two leaders have instructed their officials to expedite discussions on a balanced and commercially meaningful trade agreement. This meeting, which took place on June 17, marked the first direct talks between Modi and Trump in 16 months.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made towards an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement. They emphasized the need for a swift conclusion to the negotiations. As part of this initiative, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to visit India next week to further advance discussions on the proposed agreement.
During their talks, Modi and Trump also reviewed advancements under the India–US COMPACT, which focuses on military partnership, commerce, and technology. Launched after their meeting in Washington D.C. in February 2025, the COMPACT aims to foster transformative change in key cooperation areas. The leaders welcomed significant developments in defense, strategic technologies, energy, and bilateral trade sectors.
The discussions reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Modi and Trump reiterated their dedication to enhancing cooperation across various domains for the mutual benefit of both nations. Additionally, the leaders addressed developments in the Middle East, with Modi commending Trump for efforts aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts in the region and restoring stability.
Modi also highlighted the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the need for the safety of seafarers. This meeting occurred amid rising concerns in India regarding the deaths of three Indian crew members aboard a merchant vessel involved in American military strikes in the Gulf of Oman.
