Since establishing his presence in Mumbai nearly a decade ago, Korean producer Hyunwoo Thomas Kim has been instrumental in creating a series of innovative Indian films, including notable titles like Te3n (2016) and Jaane Jaan (2023). Initially dismissing them as spam, he later discovered that the production house was interested in acquiring the rights to *The Devotion Of Suspect X* for a Hindi remake. Intrigued by the prospect, Kim learned that acclaimed director Sujoy Ghosh was attached to the project. After watching Ghosh’s film *Kahaani* (2012), Kim was impressed enough to travel to Mumbai for a meeting, where he ultimately granted the remake rights.
Kim expressed his fascination with Mumbai, noting the ease of communication due to the widespread use of English. This accessibility encouraged him to spend more time in India, where he recognized a significant market for films. He remarked on the abundance of talented directors and actors but identified a gap in high-caliber writing, similar to what he had experienced in Korea. Despite initial skepticism from others about his commitment to the Indian market, Kim remained undeterred, stating, “I figured, India has a huge market, great directors, actors… What it lacks is writers of the calibre in Korea.”
Challenges and Legal Battles
The journey to remake *The Devotion Of Suspect X* faced delays, with the film only being released as *Jaane Jaan* in 2023. Kim explained that the release of *Drishyam* (2013), which drew inspiration from the same story, complicated matters. Although he considered legal action against the makers of *Drishyam*, he ultimately decided against it when Ekta Kapoor, a prominent figure in the industry, backed off.
In contrast, Kim successfully navigated a legal battle regarding the Kannada film *Pushpaka Vimana* (2017), which was a remake of *Miracle In Cell No. 7* (2013), a film for which he holds the rights. The Bombay High Court ruled in his favor, preventing the filmmakers from granting any rights related to satellite or telecast distribution. This victory underscored Kim’s determination to protect his intellectual property while navigating the complexities of the Indian film landscape.
Future Projects and Collaborations
Looking ahead, Hyunwoo Thomas Kim is eager to expand his portfolio in Bollywood. He recently reached out to Akshay Kumar regarding a potential remake of a Korean film, indicating that Sujoy Ghosh has already drafted a script for the project. Kim shared, “Just yesterday, I texted Akshay Kumar, who’s in London, asking him to watch a particular film that everyone in the industry knows about. If Akshay agrees, we have a project.” This collaboration could mark another significant milestone in Kim’s career as he continues to foster cross-cultural storytelling.
In addition to his ongoing projects, Kim has received a warm welcome from the Hindi film industry. He has met with numerous industry figures, including Shah Rukh Khan, who initially reached out to him about a script.
