Binance Allocates $6.34 Billion to Offset Hack Losses, Ensuring Users Remain Unaffected

After a significant security breach, Binance has allocated over $6.34 billion to cover losses from a recent crypto theft. The exchange has assured users that they will not bear any financial impact from the incident. Binance has already replaced approximately 80% of the stolen assets and is working to restore withdrawal services in phases.

Recovery Efforts Underway

Binance has successfully repurchased around $5 billion worth of stolen cryptocurrencies, including USDC, USDT, Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and BNB. The company is actively pursuing the remaining tokens through market and over-the-counter (OTC) purchases. “This means that we have already covered approximately 80% of the impacted amount,” Binance stated. The recovery process is being funded through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate treasury.

The breach occurred on October 29, when Binance’s hot wallets were compromised, leading to unauthorized withdrawals of approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets. In addition to replacing stolen assets, Binance has managed to freeze about $3 billion worth of the stolen funds across various blockchain networks. This effort involved collaboration with law enforcement, blockchain intelligence firms, asset issuers, and industry partners.

Investigation Reveals Additional Breaches

Binance’s ongoing investigation has revealed more details about the security breach. Initial assessments suggested a compromised laptop was involved, but further findings indicated additional points of intrusion. The company has confirmed that there is no evidence of wallet private keys being leaked. More technical findings are expected within the next 48 hours.

Link to North Korean Hacking Group

Blockchain investigation firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the $6.3 billion theft to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor. Cybersecurity experts have noted that funds generated from North Korean cryptocurrency thefts have been used to finance the country’s weapons programs. However, Binance has not publicly identified the perpetrators and continues to conduct its investigation. The exchange plans to release a detailed technical report outlining the breach and additional security measures to prevent future incidents.
