Government to Establish Processing Parks in Four States with Emphasis on Lithium and Nickel
India is set to establish four dedicated critical mineral processing parks in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. This initiative aims to enhance domestic processing capacity for lithium and nickel, according to Mines Secretary Keshav Chandra. The government plans to create ecosystems around specific minerals, integrating processing and downstream industries.
The focus on lithium and nickel stems from their significance in the battery sector, which is crucial for future growth. Chandra emphasized the urgency of fast-tracking these minerals, stating that batteries are now the most vital component globally. The government is preparing to introduce measures for these minerals and is currently identifying designated parks for their development.
Each processing park will encompass the entire value chain for the designated minerals, facilitating value addition at various stages within a single location. State governments will spearhead the planning and implementation of these parks, with the Centre providing technical support. Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy confirmed that the Centre has reached out to state governments and chief ministers for their cooperation.
These parks are part of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), which has a total outlay of Rs 34,300 crore over seven years. The mission aims to achieve self-reliance in critical minerals and accelerate India’s transition to green energy. The government has allocated Rs 16,300 crore for the mission, while public sector enterprises are expected to contribute Rs 18,000 crore. The NCMM also promotes the exploration of critical minerals both domestically and in offshore locations.
