Future of Train Travel on Indian Railways
Train travel in India is set for a significant transformation as Indian Railways prepares to roll out a series of innovative train services, including the much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper trains. These developments aim to enhance the travel experience for millions of passengers across the country. With the introduction of new train models like the Amrit Bharat Express and NaMo Bharat trains, the future of rail travel in India looks promising, catering to both premium and budget travelers alike.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains: A New Era of Comfort
The Vande Bharat sleeper train project is a major initiative by Indian Railways, with plans to introduce over 200 sleeper trains in the coming years. This project aims to revolutionize long-distance travel, offering a more luxurious experience compared to traditional services like the Rajdhani Express. Currently, three major manufacturers are involved in producing these sleeper trains: BEML, a consortium of Titagarh and BHEL, and an Indo-Russian joint venture called Kinet. Each of these entities is working on different sets of sleeper trains, with BEML already having produced two prototypes.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that the sleeper trains will undergo minor retrofitting and are expected to launch by December 2024. The first prototype features 16 passenger coaches, including various classes of air-conditioned accommodations. Designed for semi-high-speed travel, these trains can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, although most of the Indian rail network may not support such speeds. The sleeper trains will include modern amenities such as cushioned berths, bio-vacuum toilets, and an advanced safety system known as KAVACH. Additionally, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) is developing its own version of the sleeper train, which will feature enhanced facilities for long-distance travel.
Amrit Bharat Trains: Affordable Travel for Everyone
In parallel with the premium Vande Bharat sleeper trains, Indian Railways is also focusing on the Amrit Bharat trains, which aim to provide modern travel options for the general public. Launched at the end of 2023, the Amrit Bharat Express trains are designed with a mix of general and second-class sleeper coaches. These trains utilize push-pull technology, allowing for faster acceleration and deceleration, with a maximum speed of 130 km/h.
The ICF is currently rolling out the second version of the Amrit Bharat trains, known as Amrit Bharat 2.0, which offers improved comfort compared to the initial prototypes. Features include foldable snack tables, enhanced seating, and modern toilets equipped with advanced flushing systems. The ICF has received orders for 100 Amrit Bharat trains, with plans to introduce a third version that includes air-conditioned coaches by March 2026. This ongoing development aims to ensure that the Amrit Bharat trains not only match but exceed the comfort levels of existing services like the Rajdhani Express.
NaMo Bharat Trains and Future Innovations
Indian Railways is also introducing NaMo Bharat trains, designed for short-distance inter-city travel. These trains, which have already been launched on select routes, are a metro-style variant of the Vande Bharat Express, capable of reaching speeds of 130 km/h. The NaMo Bharat trains feature fully air-conditioned coaches, advanced braking systems, and modern passenger information systems.
In addition to these developments, Indian Railways is working on an indigenous bullet train project, which aims to manufacture high-speed train sets tailored to Indian conditions. The first prototypes are expected to be operational by early 2027. Furthermore, a hydrogen-powered train is being developed as a technology demonstrator, showcasing India’s capabilities in sustainable rail transport. This train is set to operate on the Jind and Sonipat route in Haryana, with speeds of up to 110 km/h.
