EPFO Approves 99% of Higher Pension Applications Under EPS 1995; Fund Ensures Minimum Pension of Rs 1,000

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made significant strides in processing applications for increased pensions under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) 1995, with nearly 99 percent of requests completed. This update was shared by Shobha Karandlaje, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, during a Lok Sabha session. The EPFO’s actions follow a Supreme Court ruling from November 2022, which mandated timely implementation of changes to the pension scheme. As of now, a substantial number of applications have been submitted and processed, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing pension benefits for workers.
Application Processing and Deadlines
The EPFO has efficiently managed the influx of applications for higher pension contributions, utilizing an online platform that allowed both pensioners and members to submit their requests. By the deadline of July 11, 2023, a total of 17.49 lakh applications were submitted. Of these, approximately 15.24 lakh applications were forwarded by employers to the EPFO by January 31, 2025. As of November 24, 2025, the EPFO reported that nearly all applications had been processed. The Minister noted that 4,27,308 demand letters were issued, although 34,060 cases were deemed ineligible, primarily due to issues related to the non-remittance of the required demand amount.
Compliance and Pension Payment Orders
Among the applicants who complied with the requirements, around 2,33,303 individuals have either deposited the necessary demand amount or provided consent. This group includes 96,274 individuals who are still in service and 1,37,029 who have already retired. For those who have retired, Pension Payment Orders (PPOs) have been issued to approximately 1,24,457 applicants, while an additional 12,572 PPOs are currently being finalized. This swift processing indicates the EPFO’s dedication to ensuring that eligible pensioners receive their benefits in a timely manner.
Fairness and Equity in the Pension Scheme
Minister Karandlaje emphasized the equitable nature of the EPS, highlighting that the pro-rata calculation under Para 12 treats both pensioners earning below the wage ceiling and those with higher salaries fairly. She pointed out that the Supreme Court did not find any issues with this approach, reinforcing the legitimacy of the scheme. The EPS 1995 operates as a ‘Defined Contribution-Defined Benefit’ social security plan, funded by contributions from employers and the central government. This structure aims to provide a sustainable pension system for workers.
Government Commitment to Pensioners
The government remains committed to enhancing the benefits available to workers under the EPS-95 scheme. Karandlaje reiterated that the government is focused on ensuring maximum benefits while considering the health of the pension funds and future liabilities. Additionally, the government guarantees a minimum monthly pension of Rs 1,000, alongside an annual budgetary contribution of 1.16 percent of wages. This commitment reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to support pensioners and improve their financial security in retirement.
