Experts at a national conference on energy and technology highlighted the country’s surplus electricity capacity and ongoing reforms in the power distribution sector as key factors in this transformation. Jitendra Srivastava, chairman and managing director of REC Limited, emphasized that the rise of AI and data centers is redefining electricity as a strategic asset, positioning India uniquely in the global market.
Transformative Initiatives in Power Distribution
The National Conference on AI and Machine Learning-based solutions in the power sector served as a platform for collaboration among solution providers and power distribution companies. Shashank Mishra, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Power, noted that the initiative aims to foster innovation by bringing together various stakeholders to develop new solutions. He stated, “Today we are bringing together solution providers and distribution companies on a single platform where they can interact and develop new solutions and ideas.” The conference also featured awards for the most innovative concepts, as recognized by the Minister of Power, highlighting the government’s commitment to transforming the energy sector.
Mishra expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential impact, describing it as a “transformative” step for the industry. Smart Metering and Advanced Analytics
During the conference, Srivastava underscored the importance of smart metering as a core component of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). He explained that while smart meters offer numerous benefits, their full potential can only be realized through advanced analytics powered by AI and machine learning. These technologies can significantly improve various aspects of power distribution, including anti-theft measures, load forecasting, and system optimization.
Srivastava emphasized that leveraging AI and machine learning is essential for understanding the advantages of smart metering. He stated, “To understand the advantages of smart metering, it is essential to leverage the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning.” The integration of these technologies is expected to enhance consumer services, assist electricity regulators, and enable distribution companies to operate more efficiently.
India’s Growing Energy Sector
India’s energy sector has seen substantial growth in recent years, effectively balancing rising demand with sustainability objectives. According to projections from the International Energy Agency, emerging and developing economies will account for approximately 85% of the global electricity demand growth over the next three years, with India playing a pivotal role in this expansion. As of June 2025, India’s total installed power capacity is projected to reach 476 GW, while power shortages have dramatically decreased from 4.2% in 2013-14 to just 0.1% in 2024-25.
