CSIR-NIScPR Unveils Renovated Facilities and Initiatives
The CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR) marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its newly renovated second floor in New Delhi on December 13, 2024. The event was graced by Dr. (Mrs.) N. Kalaiselvi, the Director General of CSIR and Secretary of DSIR, Government of India. This renovation aims to bolster the institute’s capabilities in science communication and policy research, reflecting its commitment to advancing these critical fields.
Enhancing Science Communication and Policy Research
The renovation of the second floor at CSIR-NIScPR is a strategic move to enhance its facilities for science communication and policy research. This upgrade will provide researchers and students with improved resources and a conducive environment for their work. Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, the Director of CSIR-NIScPR, welcomed Dr. Kalaiselvi and other dignitaries, highlighting the significance of the institute’s programs. She noted that this was Dr. Kalaiselvi’s third visit to the institute this year, underscoring the importance of NIScPR’s initiatives.
During her address, Prof. Aggarwal celebrated the achievements of the institute, including the awarding of PhD degrees to 16 students and the training of 50 students in science communication and Science Technology Innovation Policy. Notably, NIScPR is the only institution in India offering a PhD in these specialized areas. This unique position allows the institute to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of science communication and policy research in the country.
A Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
In conjunction with the inauguration, CSIR-NIScPR also launched a tree plantation drive titled โEk Ped Maa Ke Naamโ (A Tree in the Name of Mother). This initiative aims to promote environmental conservation and sustainability, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. The drive encourages participants to plant trees as a tribute to their mothers, fostering a sense of responsibility towards nature.
The tree plantation drive reflects the institute’s commitment to not only advancing scientific research but also contributing positively to the environment. By engaging in such initiatives, CSIR-NIScPR aims to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation among its staff and the broader community. This dual focus on research and sustainability positions the institute as a leader in both science and environmental stewardship.
Interactive Session with Dr. Kalaiselvi
Following the inauguration, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi engaged with scientists and research scholars during an interactive session held at the Vivekananda Conference Hall. She emphasized the importance of NIScPR as the nodal institution in India assigned an ISSN number for Indian journals. However, she noted that greater awareness of this initiative is necessary to maximize its impact.
Dr. Kalaiselvi also highlighted the significance of regional language-based journals, which are crucial for the country’s progress. She stressed that the introduction chapter in any PhD thesis should be reviewed and published as a review paper. This approach not only enhances the quality of research but also promotes better communication of scientific findings. Furthermore, she discussed two approaches to conducting science: experimental and theoretical studies, emphasizing the need for predictions of future outcomes.
Fostering Future Science Communicators
Dr. Kalaiselvi’s vision for CSIR-NIScPR includes producing top-notch science communicators capable of publishing their research in high-impact journals. She encouraged students to develop their documentation skills and create graphical abstracts to enhance their research presentations. Additionally, she proposed the establishment of a unique platform to showcase innovations in science communication through short videos and reels.
This initiative aims to engage a broader audience and make scientific research more accessible and relatable. By leveraging modern communication tools, CSIR-NIScPR seeks to inspire the next generation of scientists and communicators. Dr. Yogesh Suman, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR, concluded the event with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and the importance of the day’s discussions.
