Indian Railways Launches Comprehensive Cleanliness Drive for Safe Drinking Water
Indian Railways has initiated a special cleanliness drive across its extensive network, targeting the thorough cleaning and disinfection of drinking water tanks and filtration systems. This initiative aims to ensure that passengers have continued access to safe and clean drinking water at railway stations, forming part of a larger strategy to enhance drinking water quality management across the organization.
The action plan emphasizes rigorous inspection and maintenance of the entire drinking water system. This includes not only testing the water at the source but also at points of consumption, moving away from the traditional reliance on end-of-pipe tests.
Comprehensive Inspection and Maintenance
During the cleanliness drive, Zonal Railways will conduct a thorough inspection of all water sources, treatment and filtration plants, as well as underground and overhead tanks. This will extend to PVC tanks, water booths, taps, and water dispensing points. Each drinking water tank will be systematically drained, desludged, scrubbed, and disinfected to maintain hygiene standards.
Furthermore, measures will be implemented to ensure that all tanks are securely covered and adequately protected against birds, animals, and algae. The drive will also identify areas needing corrective action, with damaged tanks, pipelines, and filters slated for repair or replacement as needed. Importantly, the initiative aims to prevent cross-connections between potable and non-potable water systems.
Focused Quality Management
As part of the enhanced action plan, the Railway Board has instructed Zonal Railways to inspect water coolers and purification systems in detail. This includes ensuring that cooler tanks are cleaned regularly and that any leaks in coolers, pipelines, and taps are swiftly addressed. The hygiene of the areas surrounding water-cooler dispenses is also a priority.
UV and RO purification systems utilized in these coolers will be checked for functionality and installed wherever necessary. Regular maintenance on components such as filter candles will be conducted to ensure optimal performance. New or upgraded UV/RO systems are to be deployed based on their condition and requirements.
Rigorous Testing and Monitoring
The prescribed cleaning and quality control measures will also apply to Water Vending Machines, ensuring that the water dispensed meets all required safety standards. Officials will carry out physical, chemical, and bacteriological testing of water samples from various identified points, including sources and treatment outlets. Monitoring for residual chlorine will occur daily, with immediate corrective action as necessary.
Infrastructure Oversight and Future Improvements
The Railway Board has called for expedited monitoring of approved works related to the replacement and construction of overhead and underground tanks. A comprehensive summary of these efforts will be compiled, with new requests processed as needed to bolster water quality infrastructure.
In addition, planned filtration and purification systems will be tailored to address contamination risks effectively at all stages of the drinking water supply chain. Zonal Railways will report deficiencies and corrective actions taken on a station-by-station basis, allowing for systematic oversight of any issues discovered during the drive.
This strategic initiative not only focuses on providing safe drinking water for passengers but also extends to railway colonies and workplaces, underscoring a commitment to public health and well-being within the broader community.
