Tablets Benefit as Laptop Prices Increase
NEW DELHI: India’s tablet market is experiencing significant growth, driven by rising laptop prices and increasing consumer demand for larger, more powerful devices. According to research agency CMR, the market grew by 37% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026. Tablets priced above Rs 20,000 accounted for 86% of shipments, with a remarkable 92% growth in this segment. Devices with screens larger than 10 inches made up nearly 90% of the market.
The trend towards higher specifications is evident. Tablets with 6GB RAM saw a 284% year-on-year increase during the quarter, while those with 12GB RAM surged by 835%. Counterpoint data corroborates this shift, showing a 338% increase in shipments of tablets with screens measuring 13 inches and above. In contrast, shipments of tablets below 10 inches fell by 52%.
Xiaomi’s spokesperson noted that the line between tablets and laptops is blurring, predicting that tablets will capture a larger share of everyday computing in the next two to three years. HP views this trend as an expansion of computing options rather than a replacement cycle. Vineet Gehani, senior director at HP India, emphasized that with PC penetration at around 17%, there is a growing opportunity to enhance access to computing through various form factors.
HP’s products, such as the OmniPad, target students and professionals seeking mobility and productivity features. Xiaomi reported that 81% of tablets shipped in India during the last quarter of 2025 were productivity-focused, with devices featuring screens of 11 inches and above making up 85% of shipments.
Despite the growth in the tablet segment, the overall market is not uniformly positive. Counterpoint estimates a 5% growth for Q1, while CMR anticipates a decline of 10-12% for the full year. Average selling prices for both laptops and tablets have risen in double digits in the first half of 2026, with notebook prices increasing more sharply.
