Talabira II & III Mine Achieves Record Coal Production in India
The Government of India is making significant strides in boosting domestic coal production and enhancing energy security, particularly through the Talabira II & III Open Cast Coal Mine in Odisha. Allocated to NLC India Ltd. in May 2016, this mine has emerged as a beacon of efficiency, achieving record production metrics while prioritizing technology, safety, and community welfare.
Located across the districts of Sambalpur and Jharsuguda, Talabira II & III has experienced remarkable growth. In the fiscal year 2025-26, the mine achieved a record annual coal production of 19.14 million tonnes (MT), marking an impressive year-on-year increase of 11.28%. On March 21, 2026, the mine also set a new daily production record of 126,138.07 tonnes and a monthly record of 3.39 MT.
The mine’s successful production is matched by strong coal dispatch figures. For the same fiscal year, total dispatch reached 17.69 MT, with nearly 10.72 MT supplied directly to the power sector and 6.97 MT to non-regulated users. The coal produced here powers numerous facilities across various states, supporting energy needs in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
Utilizing Advanced Technology for Efficiency
Technological advancements play a crucial role in the mine’s operational efficiency. The introduction of the Digital Logistics Management System (DLMS) allows for comprehensive digital oversight of coal transportation. With RFID vehicle verification and AI-enhanced monitoring, entry and weighment times for vehicles have seen significant reductions. The mine also utilizes modern equipment such as surface miners outfitted with dust suppression systems and employs drone technology for surveying.
Commitment to Safety and Sustainability
The Talabira II & III mine prioritizes safety, with no fatal accidents recorded since it began operations. Robust safety measures include a comprehensive Safety Management Plan, rigorous training programs, and the use of technology like the ARAN Safety App for reporting potential hazards. The mine’s commitment to environmental responsibility is evident, with extensive plantation efforts covering over 52 hectares and the establishment of solar energy solutions.
Additionally, the mine creates substantial employment opportunities. Currently, it provides 3,277 jobs, 1,277 of which are direct, while the remainder supports the local economy through transportation and other services. The company also invests in community development, spending ₹5.32 crore in FY 2025-26 on healthcare, education, and infrastructure projects.

From its initial allocation in 2016 to its current status as a high-capacity producer, Talabira II & III showcases how properly managed coal resources can drive energy security in India. With cumulative production of 72.23 MT and dispatch of 70.89 MT as of mid-August 2026, the project exemplifies the successful implementation of the Government’s coal policy while contributing to the vision of a self-reliant and developed India.
