China Surpasses US with Highest Number of Billionaires; India Holds Third Place
China has officially surpassed the United States in the number of billionaires, according to the latest Hurun Global Rich List released by the Shanghai-based Hurun Group. The report reveals that China is home to 1,110 billionaires out of a total of 4,020 worldwide, marking a significant increase of 287 new billionaires since last year. This surge is attributed to the booming global stock markets and advancements in artificial intelligence, which have played a crucial role in wealth generation.
China’s Billionaire Boom
The Hurun Global Rich List highlights a remarkable trend in wealth concentration, with China leading the way in billionaire creation. Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Group, emphasized that the number of billionaires is at an all-time high, driven largely by the rise of artificial intelligence and China’s expanding global presence. The report indicates that the wealth generated in the past year was unprecedented, with over 700 new billionaires emerging—an average of two new billionaires each day.
Artificial intelligence has been a significant contributor to this wealth increase, with two new billionaires emerging from the sector in China alone. Yan Junjie of MiniMax and Liu Debing of Knowledge Atlas Technology JSC joined the ranks with net worths of $3.6 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively. The global impact of AI is also notable, as it has produced a total of 114 billionaires, including 46 newcomers, making it the largest single source of new wealth.
Sector Contributions to Wealth Growth
The report outlines that the new billionaires in China primarily stem from various sectors, including industrial products, semiconductors, healthcare, and energy. In the semiconductor industry, Chen Weiliang of MetaX Integrated Circuits and Zhang Jianzhong of Moore Threads Technology emerged as leaders, boasting net worths of $4.7 billion and $4.6 billion, respectively. In the healthcare sector, Au Yat-Gai of Regencell Bioscience topped the list with a staggering $13 billion.
The energy sector, particularly the electric vehicle battery industry, has also seen substantial growth, contributing to the overall increase in billionaires. The report notes that approximately three-quarters of China’s billionaires were not on the list a decade ago, highlighting the rapid changes in wealth distribution and creation within the country.
Global Billionaire Landscape
On a global scale, the Hurun report indicates that the total number of billionaires increased by 578 over the past year. The United States remains in second place with 1,000 billionaires, an increase of 130 from the previous year, while India ranks third with 308 billionaires. Germany follows closely with 171 billionaires, surpassing the United Kingdom.
The report also identifies the top billionaires, with Elon Musk leading the pack at $792 billion, followed by Jeff Bezos of Amazon at $300 billion and Larry Page of Alphabet at $281 billion. Musk’s wealth surged by 89 percent, primarily due to the doubling of Tesla stock and SpaceX’s anticipated IPO.
City Rankings and Demographics
New York City retains its title as the world’s billionaire capital, housing 146 billionaires. Shenzhen follows with 132, while Shanghai, Beijing, and London round out the top five. Hong Kong ranks seventh with 88 billionaires, including notable figures like Li Ka-shing and his son, Victor Li Tzar-kuoi.
The report also reveals that the average age of billionaires globally is 65 years. Additionally, it notes that 42 billionaires originally from China now reside in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia, as well as in the United States. This demographic shift reflects the global nature of wealth and the movement of affluent individuals across borders.
