Chandrasekaran and Noel Tata Brief Government on Rift and Concerns Prior to Exit

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran is set to step down in February, prompting discussions among senior government officials regarding internal strife within the Tata Group. The discord primarily involves Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, focusing on strategic governance and the future of new business ventures. Concerns were raised about recent losses at Air India and Tata’s digital platforms, as well as semiconductor projects.

Both Chandrasekaran and Noel Tata engaged with government leaders separately, although the specifics of these discussions remain unverified. Noel Tata’s recent trip to Delhi coincided with Independence Day and the Parsi New Year, but sources indicated it was unrelated to succession talks. He is expected to step down as non-executive chairman of Trent in November due to the group’s retirement policy.

While government interest in the Tata Group’s internal matters is unusual, it is not unprecedented. In 2025, following Noel Tata’s appointment as chairman of Tata Trusts, similar tensions led to discussions with government officials about corporate governance issues. More recently, in June 2026, Noel Tata met with Reserve Bank of India officials to express concerns over a potential initial public offering for Tata Sons, which could impact the Trusts’ control over the company. A trustee noted that ongoing tensions between the chairmen of Tata Sons and the Trusts indicate a need for a long-term solution.
