CareEdge Forecasts Robust 7% Growth for India in 2026-27 Amid Global Uncertainties
Even amidst global uncertainties, the Indian economy is projected to achieve a robust growth rate of 7% in the financial year 2026-27, according to CareEdge Ratings. This optimistic outlook is bolstered by factors such as low inflation, reduced interest rates, and a lighter tax burden. While merchandise exports face challenges due to tariff uncertainties, the agency notes that strong services exports will help maintain a stable external economic position.
Current Economic Performance
The Indian economy has shown remarkable resilience in the financial year 2025-26, with the government’s First Advance Estimate (FAE) indicating a GDP growth of 7.4%. This growth has been driven by several supportive measures, including income tax reductions, rationalization of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, and a sustained increase in services exports. Additionally, easing inflation and rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have further contributed to this positive momentum. CareEdge Ratings emphasized that despite a challenging global economic environment, the domestic fundamentals of the Indian economy remain strong.
For the upcoming financial year, CareEdge forecasts a real GDP growth of 7%, with nominal GDP growth expected to reach 10.1%. The macroeconomic outlook for India appears constructive as it heads into 2026-27, with the RBI projecting a GDP growth of 7.3% for 2025-26. Sachin Gupta, Chief Rating Officer and Executive Director at CareEdge, expressed optimism about the macroeconomic landscape, highlighting controlled inflation, reasonable interest rates, and a robust banking sector characterized by low non-performing assets.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the encouraging economic indicators, CareEdge Ratings warns of emerging challenges that could impact future growth. One significant concern is the depreciation of the Indian rupee, which has weakened against the US dollar and other major currencies. Over the past year, the rupee has fallen by more than 15% against both the British pound and the euro. This trend raises alarms about the potential impact on foreign investment.
The report also highlights troubling foreign investment trends, noting that foreign portfolio investors experienced net outflows of nearly USD 18 billion in 2025. Furthermore, net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has drastically declined from USD 44 billion in 2021-22 to a mere USD 0.5 billion in 2024-25. CareEdge suggests that these declines reflect more than just a temporary shift in sentiment and could pose long-term challenges for India’s economic ambitions.
Strategic Recommendations
To sustain its growth trajectory and achieve its goal of becoming a “Viksit Bharat,” India must not only rely on strong domestic fundamentals but also focus on attracting long-term investments and enhancing its competitiveness in global markets. While the current growth narrative remains intact, the report emphasizes the need for a recalibrated economic strategy to address warning signs such as weak capital inflows, currency pressures, and increasing trade barriers.
As the Union Budget for 2026-27 approaches, it will be presented against a backdrop of healthy domestic growth and low inflation. However, external threats continue to loom. Raj Sinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge, recommends that the government prioritize research and development, innovation, job creation, and targeted support for the agriculture sector to navigate these challenges effectively. The Union Budget is scheduled to be unveiled in Parliament on February 1, 2026.
