BRICS Agriculture Conference Kicks Off in Indore, Focusing on Food Security and Climate-Smart Farming
A five-day meeting of BRICS member countries commenced in Indore on Tuesday, focusing on critical issues such as food security, climate-resilient agriculture, and farmer welfare. Under India’s BRICS chairmanship, officials from member nations engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in the agriculture sector. Key topics include the impact of climate change on farming and the need for increased agricultural collaboration.
Ajit Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) in the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, emphasized the importance of these discussions. He noted that BRICS countries represent nearly half of the world’s population, making food security a pressing concern. “Agriculture ensures food security and nutritional security. Therefore, agricultural development is essential,” Sahu stated.
The meeting will also address the exchange of agricultural technology and strategies to boost trade among BRICS nations. Sahu mentioned that eight meetings have already taken place under four sessions of the Agriculture Working Group, with the current session being held in person. The Agriculture Working Group will continue its discussions until June 11, followed by a meeting of agriculture ministers from BRICS and partner countries on June 12 and 13.
The agenda for the five-day event includes topics such as climate-friendly smart agriculture, international agricultural trade, supply chains, digital agriculture, research, knowledge sharing, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics. A joint declaration is anticipated after the agriculture ministers reach a consensus on key issues.
