BCCL Achieves Record Coal Production and Financial Milestones

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a prominent subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has reported remarkable achievements for the fiscal year 2024-25. The company has set new records in coal production, financial performance, and sustainability initiatives, solidifying its critical role in India’s coal industry. Unprecedented Production and Operational Success
BCCL has made history by achieving its highest-ever coal production in the fourth quarter, reaching 11.44 million tonnes, with March 2025 alone contributing 4.33 million tonnes. The company also recorded its highest overburden removal at 181.30 million cubic meters and a second-highest annual coal production of 40.50 million tonnes, despite facing the most significant rainfall in 50 years, totaling 1,747 mm. The offtake reached an impressive 38.25 million tonnes, supported by a 6% increase in rail dispatch, even with high coal stocks at power plants. Underground coal production saw a remarkable 49% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, BCCL identified 16 new hired patches with a combined capacity of 13.30 million tonnes annually, awarding 7.0 million tonnes of this capacity. For the first time, coal production under the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) model began at NTST-Kujama in the Lodna Area in April 2024. Furthermore, grade confirmation through third-party sampling achieved a rate of 94%, surpassing the Ministry of Coal’s guideline of 90%.
Financial Milestones and Achievements
BCCL has marked a significant financial milestone by paying its first dividend of โน44.43 crore to CIL on August 5, 2024, following the clearance of its accumulated losses. The company also achieved its highest scrap sale at โน18.01 crore and secured an income tax refund totaling โน104 crores, which includes โน63.87 crore in principal and โน40.12 crore in interest. Additionally, BCCL paid the highest income tax in the last decade, amounting to โน406.00 crores. The company exceeded its capital expenditure (CAPEX) target for the fourth consecutive year, achieving โน1,100 crore against a target of โน1,000 crore. Procurement through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) soared to โน4,155.83 crore, representing 136% of the โน3,060 crore target, which included significant investments in heavy machinery and IT initiatives.
Innovations in Washery and Digital Transformation
BCCL’s washeries have set new records, with raw coal feed reaching 56 lakh tonnes, the highest in 25 years, marking a 15% increase. The supply of washed coal to the steel sector peaked at 17.02 lakh tonnes, the highest in 20 years, reflecting a 16% rise. The company excelled in by-product disposal, with washery rejects at 8.67 lakh tonnes, up 77%, and washed power coal at 28.95 lakh tonnes, up 5%. In a pioneering move, BCCL initiated India’s first coal washery monetization by leasing the old and idle Dugdha Washery (2.0 MTPA) for โน762 crore over 25 years. Additionally, a request for proposals (RFP) was issued for the monetization of the Sudamdih Washery (1.6 MTPA) on March 28, 2025. On the digital front, BCCL implemented the SAP BG module, resulting in savings of โน86 lakh in upkeep allowances. The in-house team developed innovative ERP solutions, enhancing operational efficiency and transparency.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community Welfare
BCCL has made significant strides towards its Net Zero goals, commissioning 4.088 MWp of rooftop solar power and initiating work orders for 25 MW at Bhojudih and 20 MW at Dugdha washeries. The company has implemented energy efficiency measures, including 100% LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances, while also transitioning to electric vehicles in its transportation fleet, leading to substantial fuel savings. In terms of community engagement, BCCL’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) expenditure reached โน21.89 crore, exceeding its target by 117%. The company has trained 200 project-affected persons in petrochemical engineering, with a 100% placement rate, and has installed smart classrooms and ICT labs in 79 schools in the Dhanbad district. BCCL’s commitment to community welfare is further evidenced by its medical upgrades and recruitment initiatives, which include compassionate employment for dependents of employees.
