Airlines Embrace AI Technology for Fuel Efficiency; IndiGo Launches Trials for Cost-Effective Take-offs Today

NEW DELHI: Indian airlines are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce fuel consumption amid soaring fuel prices. IndiGo has initiated a trial of the “OptiClimb solution” starting Thursday, which aims to optimize fuel use during the climb phase of flights. This AI-powered system will allow pilots to adjust their takeoff speeds, potentially saving 60-65 kilograms of fuel per flight.

The airline operates approximately 2,000 flights daily, suggesting that even a partial implementation of this solution could lead to significant fuel savings. Lower fuel consumption also translates to reduced carbon emissions. IndiGo will evaluate the results of the trial before deciding whether to adopt the OptiClimb solution across its Airbus fleet.

In an email to around 6,000 pilots, Captain Ashim Mittra, IndiGo’s senior VP of flight operations, explained that the climb phase is the most fuel-intensive part of a flight. The OptiClimb solution leverages advancements in aircraft performance analytics to refine climb profiles based on various factors, including aircraft weight and atmospheric conditions. This approach aims to enhance fuel efficiency while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.

Fuel efficiency has become increasingly critical for airlines since the 2008 financial crisis, which saw energy prices rise sharply. In response, airlines have made various adjustments, including reducing onboard weight and developing more efficient engines. While next-generation fuel-efficient aircraft are still years away, AI solutions like OptiClimb offer a practical way for airlines to achieve fuel savings in the interim. Captain Mittra emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance operational sustainability while adhering to air traffic control requirements.
