Indian Railways using newer technologies for tracking trains
As part of the Real-Time Train Information System (RTIS), developed in collaboration with ISRO, locomotives will be equipped with technology to automatically acquire train movement timing at stations, including arrivals and departures as well as run-throughs. In the Control Office Application (COA) system, they are automatically plotted on the control chart of each train.
The Train Control is now able to track the location and speed of RTIS-enabled locomotives/trains more closely, without having to intervene manually.
The ISRO Satcom hub has been used to cover 2700 locomotives in 21 electric loco sheds. 6000 more locomotives across 50 loco sheds will be covered as part of Phase II through the use of RTIS devices. As of now, GPS data from approximately 6500 locomotives (RTIS and REMMLOT) is directly transmitted to the Control Office Application (COA). By integrating the COA and NTES systems, passengers have been able to access real-time information about trains.
